Cable Department
1999-2000 Annual Report
Mission Statement
The goal of the Cable Commission is to provide broadcasting of Township
Board, Planning Commission, School Board and any other commission meeting
the Township Board deems necessary, as well as taping and replaying selected
programs to viewers of both the municipal channel (GI–TV) and the School
Channel. In addition, the Cable Commission works with its cable providers
and the Township Board to further enhance cable television services and
products for the citizens of Grosse Ile Township in a positive manner.
- Under the guidance of the Grosse Ile Cable Commission, the Cable Department
continued to make great strides in their goal of providing better cable
services and products to the citizens of Grosse Ile Township.
- In the fall of 1999, Americast started offering services to Island
residents.
- In mid-October, the Franchise agreement with Comcast Cable of Taylorthat
was originally signed in 1984, expired amidst continuing negotiations.
Withan agreement relatively close, the Township Board, with the recommendation
of the Cable Commission, extended the franchise agreement until April
1, 2000. At the end of January 2000, a tentative agreement was reached
with Comcast and should be finalized soon.
- Comcast Cable modernized their cable delivery system by wiring the
entire island for fiber optics. This enabled Comcast to offer better
cable reception and digital cable.
- Comcast introduced @HOME Computer Service to Island residents.
- The Cable Department continued to cablecast on a taped basis, the
TownshipBoard, Planning Commission, and School Board meetings. Under
the directive of the Cable Commission, the Recreation Commission and
the Cable Commission, as well as some of the Brownfield Authority meetings
are now being taped.
- A survey was circulated among the remaining commissions, to see if
interest existed in cable casting the other board and commission meetings.
At this time the Township Board is considering what future additions
to the cablecast schedule may be added.
- Over the past year, the Cable Department and the Recreation Department
have co-sponsored a number of projects. This past summer, 18 middle
school aged children attended a week-long video camp conducted by the
Cable Department. This school year during both semesters, the Cable
Department offered a video class as part of an after school opportunity
for middle school students.
- The Grosse Ile web page has been assigned to the Cable Department.
In the past six months, the web page has been re-designed and expanded
in an effort to make the web page user friendly .
- A major effort in the past year has been the designing of a state
of the art Township Board Chamber Room. In cooperation with Electronic
Interiors, the Cable Commission and the Township Board are looking forward
to moving into a chamber that will include four (4) three chip remote
control cameras, room designed acoustics, a video viewing screen, ADA
accessible podium, power point presentation ports, and TV lighting.
- The long awaited airport video, “On the Wings of a Dream”, was completed
in January, 2000.
- Programming on G I–T V included coverage of major Grosse Ile events,
starting with the Islandfest, the Airport Big Band Concert, the Islandfest
Parade, the Halloween Parade, and the Island Glow. Special coverage
was given to the VFW Pearl Harbor Remembrance, the Parke Lane and Meridian
Elementary Rededication Ceremonies, and the swearing in of Duncan Murdock
as Fire Chief. The cable department covered the powder puff football
game, the Homecoming Parade and Crowning, girl’s basketball games, the
Talent Show, Shakespeare Play, Honors Ceremony, and Senior Award Assembly.
Numerous elementary school plays and concerts were featured as well
as concerts and the Spelling Bee at the Middle School. Finally, specials
on the landscaping of Macomb Street, G-I Magazine and an anti-drug program
in cooperation with Grosse Ile United were aired on G I–T V. In an effort
to continue to promote the outstanding efforts of the Recreation Department,
full coverage of the Fall Harvest as well as a special show promoting
the summer issue of the Channels were produced.
In fiscal year 2000-2001, the Cable Department top priority will be
a smooth transition from its present home at the Centennial Farm to the
state of the art facilities at the new Township Hall on Groh Road.
Also, both the continuing expansion of programming for GI-TV and the
updating of the web page, www. grosseile.com, will be important mandates.
