Island Festival Committee1999-2000 Annual ReportJohn Raithel, Chairman The 1999 “IslandFest” (formerly Azalea Festival) on the scenic island community of Grosse Ile, marked the start of great happenings associated with our annual event. The festival, now under the direction of the Township Festival Commission, is charged by the Township government with the goals of bringing greater community involvement, expanding the festival while over- coming the daunting task of financially breaking-even. The Commission has made a collective commitment to achieving these goals. To that end, they changed the date of the 16th annual festival to ensure the likelihood of good weather. The new dates for this year’s festival are Thursday, June 1 through Sunday, June 4, 2000. The Commission also has requested, and been granted, start-up capital from the Township government to help ease dependence from the overburdened Recreation Department budget. This new seed-money will be used to fund the festival until revenue from the event can replenish the Commission’s budget. The fund balance will carry over year to year for seceding festival budgets as start-up capital. The thousands of visitors who crossed our picturesque shoreline last year found many new activities to explore among the time honored ones. The most renowned addition to the festival was the “World War II Big Band Dinner Dance”. The nostalgic swing dance encouraged participants to dress in war-era uniforms or civilian clothes of the same era. The organizers of the event for the Airport Memorial Fund were pleased with the sold-out dance, and plan to repeat it this year. Another major addition to the festival last year was the Antique Show, housed in Hanger 2, the show displayed antiques for show and sale. The show also offered visitors the opportunity to bring antiques from home in for appraisal. There are other new changes slated for this year’s festival, such as an expanded carnival, a classic car cruise, and electric car race, headline musical entertainment by “Steve King and the Dittilies”, and the Beatles tribute band “Shout”, and a static airplane display will accompany other perennial favorites. Another change came to the Commission in the form of a new Township Board liaison. Trustee Pam Frucci was appointed to replace Clerk Ute O’Connor. The Festival Commission continues its membership with the Michigan Festival & Events Association to help promote our event, gain ideas through educational workshops, and link us with commercial vendors. The Commission is working diligently in cooperation with community volunteers, township government and businesses to make this year’s festival the best ever. 1999-2000 Annual Report |
