Grosse Ile District Library Board1999-2000 Annual ReportIn January, 1999 a group of 28 Grosse Ile citizens began a series of meetings to evaluate the library services available to Island residents and to determine the need for a local library. The group determined that the Island would be better served by a library on Grosse Ile, subject to local control, than to use Grosse Ile tax dollars to fund off-Island-only service. A subcommittee evaluated possible locations and unanimously chose the school campus site of the 1911 Building on East River Road. No plan for restoration and use of the 1911 Building was put forth by the May 1st School Board deadline for such a proposal. On January 25, 2000 a conditional lease agreement was signed by the Board of Education and the Grosse Ile District Library Board for a 50 year lease of the property. A Feasibility Study was conducted to assess the willingness of residents to contribute substantial funding to offset the cost of the building, and to study related issues pertinent to passage of the millage question. A very favorable climate was found, and the Library Board made the decision to proceed with a capital campaign and a millage proposal. The millage proposal will appear on the June, 2000 ballot. Presently Island residents are assessed .4 mills for library services provided by the off-Island libraries in Trenton and Wyandotte. Bacon Library in Wyandotte has stated that when the doors of a Grosse Ile library open to the public, it will no longer charge Grosse Ile, due to the reciprocal arrangements through The Library Network co-operative. It is likely that charges for Grosse Ile residents’ use of Trenton Library will continue, although, with a local library to serve residents, they would be significantly reduced. Trustees
