Natural Resources Committee1999-2000 Annual ReportWalter J. Pociask, Jr.- Chair The Natural Resources Committee (NRC) is at full staff as of this report, and is an energetic and knowledgeable group of persons dedicated to being the community “watchdog” of the entire Island’s natural areas. Our committee has been called on to support the efforts of several other committees, such as the Downtown Development Authority, and the Roads Committee, when the expertise of the group is needed in support of “greening ” initiatives, for example. We are currently exploring ways of generating Island-wide support for saving trees, so that Grosse Ile can keep its rural, wooded character. We intend to work with area school children to heighten their appreciation of all the good things that trees do for the environment. We also will be working toward keeping people informed that trees are assets to their property, and all efforts should be made to work existing trees into new development plans, rather than cutting them down. Many people do not realize that, right here on Grosse Ile, we have many special specimens of several varieties of trees: Some are considered National Champions. NRC is working to locate and identify these several trees, so that citizens can see them for themselves. We need as much help as possible in this effort, so i f you really like the rural atmosphere of our community and you can squeeze in an evening a month to meet some of our community’s very best people, come to a meeting: We’d love to see you, and may even put you to work on the most fun job you ever volunteered for! Natural Resources meetings are held monthly, on the third Tuesday of each month, at 7:30p.m., in the Public Safety Building. All residents are welcome. 1999-2000 Annual Report |
