Festival Committee

2000-2001 Annual Report

Since the creation of the Festival Commission in December 1998, Grosse Ile’s Annual Festival has truly become an island-wide event. Under the Commission’s direction, IslandFest has experienced major growth in the number of events, volunteer support and community participation. This strong support is a result of a dedicated commission consisting of nine residents interested in promoting Grosse Ile’s business district, historical significance, natural environment, points of interest and sense of community.

During the 2000 Festival, attendance at Macomb Street venues increased dramatically over previous years. The increase was a result of the new Classic Car Cruise on Friday night, an expanded and improved Children’s Area and theElectric Car Race that drew spectators from all over the country. Traditional Macomb Street events such as the Parade, Arts and Crafts and Sidewalk Sales remained popular with visitors and residents alike.

The Commission moved the carnival to the Airport with plans for future expansion of the event along with other activities more conducive to open areas. Admission increased from the previous year as a result of being able to accommodate more rides.

The Airport, Westcroft Gardens and the VFW venues were popular stops for festival goers. A new event, Island Historical Tours sponsored by the Grosse Ile Historical Society was a big success and is sure to become a regular attraction.

Entertainment highlights included the Fashion Show, Big Band Dance, “Shout” Concert and the Classic Car “Oldies” show featuring Steve King and the Dittilies. All four events were well attended and received praise from all.

Other events include a Fish Fry, Lincoln Encampment, Nature Tours, Maypole Dance, Teen Foam Dance, Dunk Tank, Sand Volleyball Tournament, Velcro Wall, Pancake Breakfast, Peter and the Wolf Play and a Hole in One Contest.

The Grosse Ile Police Department provided outstanding support throughout the weekend. The department’s work with the Parade, Carnival and Electric Car Race were superb. In addition to the Police Department, the Recreation Department, DPW, Airport and Fire Department were on duty all weekend making certain their areas of responsibility were well staffed and properly functioning.

The Grosse Ile Schools opened their facilities for the Festival and the transportation department provided outstanding shuttle services all weekend.

The Commission’s decision to move the festival from mid May to the first weekend in June was a “HIT” the first year. Weather conditions were favorable the entire weekend.

Plans for the 2001 Festival continued throughout the year. New events for the coming year include a Rodeo, Donkey Races, Equestrian Center Open House and a Wild Animal Show. Based on last year’s success, the Electric Car Race is now a national event and will draw major attention from all over the country.

The Commission continued to support the efforts of the Celebration 2000-2001 Committee with their work on the New Year’s Eve Party and the Waterfront Pageant scheduled for July 22, 2001. The Committee provides regular reports to the Commission.

On a state level, the Commission continued its membership with the Michigan Festival and Events Association (MFEA). Two commission members attended the annual conference in Kalamazoo and they returned with a wealth of information. The association membership will help promote the festival, gain ideas and maintain contacts with professional vendors.

The Commission will continue working diligently in cooperation with community volunteers, Township government and businesses to make future festivals successful and a source of pride for the community.
