Year in Review, 2000 / Goals and Objectives

The Year 2000 was another aggressive year for the Fire Department.

Once again, the citizens came out last November to support the department with an overwhelming passage of the Fire Equipment Millage, which will continue to provide the current level of service to the community for another five years.

Our goal of providing a fire safe community is never-ending.

With the addition of a new rescue pumper, we have created a state of the art vehicle which is capable of handling automobile extracation and aircraft fire protection.

Another item on the agenda for the department is the upgrading of our 1984 ambulance. We hope to have the new ambulance in service by the fall of 2001.

The goal of the Grosse Ile Fire Department is to maintain a high standard of fire protection and to maintain this for years to come.

Mission Statement

• Provide firefighting services for the residents of, and visitors to, Grosse Ile, Michigan.
• Provide basic emergency medical services for the residents of, and visitors to, Grosse Ile, Michigan.
• Cooperate with the fire departments of the Downriver Mutual Assistance pact in the performance of their responsibilities.
• Instruct members of the Association in proper firefighting and emergency medical care procedures and study and improve the firefighting and emergency medical care capabilities of its members.
• Provide educational programs to the residents of Grosse Ile concerning the causes and prevention of fires and proper fire safety procedures.
• Collect and disseminate information concerning the causes of fire.
• Cultivate friendship and social contact among its members and promote and hold various social events.
• Solicit, receive, hold, invest, and disburse donations, gifts, bequests, and other funds for the purposes of the Goodfellow Association.
• Assist in the care, support, and maintenance of indigent persons and families and undertake such other chartable activities consistent with this purpose.
• Otherwise promote the general welfare of the residents of Grosse Ile.
• Do all other lawful things consistent with the purpose of this Association.

2000 Accomplishments

The first and foremost event of the year was the educating of eleven members of our department to perform as a confined space rescue team.

• The Fire Department took delivery of the new crash/rescue truck.
• New Jaws of Life and ancillary equipment brought on board.
• New light tower addition for better visibility at night.
• Turret nozzle on the new truck for better airport firefighting coverage at the Grosse Ile Airport.
• Addition of four new members to the roster.
• Fire Department covered 15% more calls over the 1999 totals.
• Fire Prevention Week was Oct. 1-7, 2000. This has been a huge success each year, as nearly 600 visitors attended the event. Many fire exhibits, handouts, and the fire smokehouse were made available. The Open House has proven very popular among residents. It is an evening out with the family and provides educational benefits close to home.
