Department of Community Development

Mission Statement:

The Department of Community Development is responsible for protecting the public health, safety and welfare of the Township regarding land use and construction in all new and existing structures.

2001 Accomplishments:

This year our Community Development Director, Dale L. Reaume, took a new position with the Township as Township Manager. This left a void within the department. *Responsibilities were divided up and administered by Richard Sligay and Lorinda Beneteau. With the combined knowledge and experience of this staff they have continued to demonstrate a clear understanding of this community’s needs and of Township policies. *Customer service continues to improve thanks to Lorrie Tyra, Permits Coordinator. Many residents and contractors have commented numerous times on the efficiency of processing permit applications and with the ability to obtain information from the department on ordinances, codes and history of properties. *The position of Code Enforcement Officer continues to be a great benefit. Tony Gray has demonstrated his sincere conviction in helping island residents resolve their conflicts rather than just ticketing and going to court. On an average, forty-four cases have been handled per month. This is a significant increase compared to last year’s twenty-five cases handled per month. Although the issuance of fines has been minimal the program continues to be a success due to the high rate of compliance. *Phase II of the Sidewalk Replacement Program has been completed. *Senior Housing, the Alpaca Farm and Water’s Edge Restaurant are some of the higher profiled projects that started in 2001 and will be completed in 2002.
