Treasurer's Department

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Treasurer’s Office is the efficient collection of all revenues due to Grosse Ile Township and other taxing units. We strive to distribute in a timely, efficient and correct manner tax monies to the various taxing units and Township accounts. The Treasurer is also responsible for the collection of other Township receipts and the investment of idle Township Funds. The Treasurer’s Office will continue to make customer service a priority by assisting residents and visitors to the Township Offices.

The Treasurer’s Office consists of Kurt M. Kobiljak, Esq., Township Treasurer, and staff members Carol Knopp who serves as Tax and Assessing Assistant and Barbara McMahon as the Cashier / Computer Network Administrator.

All funds received by the Township are deposited by the Treasurer’s Office. The Township Treasurer is also responsible for the collection and timely distribution of taxes to Wayne County, Grosse Ile Township Schools as well as Grosse Ile Township. Collections for Department of Public Works, Grosse Ile Municipal Airport, Police Department, Fire Department, Department of Community Development, and Recreation Department are collected and deposited by the Treasurer’s Office. Pet licenses are also sold on an annual basis.

In the upcoming year, the Treasurer’s Office looks forward to pursuing the following endeavors:

  1. Installation of an Outside Drop Box, which will be accessible to all taxpayers and bill payers at Township Hall.
  2. Yearly newsletter to inform residents of state, county and local issues as they relate to Grosse Ile residents and their tax dollars.
  3. Solidifying our relationship with Wayne County so that county tax dollars are returned to the Island to benefit Township residents.
  4. Implementing an investment policy that proactively invests dollars while still maintaining a conservative investment platform.
  5. Continue to make available and expanding investment reports to the Township Board and the public.
  6. Establishing a no tolerance policy as it relates to personal property tax collection accounts and the necessity of Island businesses to recognize their continued obligation to personal property tax payments.
  7. Full accessibility to the Township Hall and staff during the Christmas holidays so all residents are able to pay tax bills, water bills and receive relevant, requested information.
  8. Aggressively work with Wayne County to obtain all tax reverted properties in order that they can supplement our Township’s Open Space program.
  9. Play an active role in protecting the Township’s state revenue sharing from the improper actions of the State of Michigan.
  10. Continue a close review and determination of all Township funds, which are processed by the Treasurer’s Office to vendors and interested parties.

The Treasurer’s Office will be available as an information source to our residents. Both the Treasurer and the Deputy Treasurer are available at the residents’ convenience to meet with them and discuss those issues as it relates to township tax dollars and the Township’s investments. The Treasurer’s Office will continue to serve the public in the most efficient and courteous manner.
