Drainage Task Force

The Drainage Task Force continues to monitor complaints, however, due to the low water levels this past year there was little activity.

One referral of flooding problems in the Ruthmere, Dreschfield and Larkspur area was received. It was found that ditching had been completed and should make a difference. If the residents approve road paving, there could be further change. Drainage problems which involve private property, would be considered at the property owner’s expense.

There were two priority drainage projects completed in 2001:

  • To relieve the drainage problems at Groh Road and East River Road, the size of the storm drain was increased and an outlet provided to relieve drainage on the southwest corner.
  • To relieve problems along East River Road from Rucker to Smith’s Cut, a new storm drain was constructed and ditching improved where needed.

The drainage problems at the intersection of West River Road and Grosse Ile Parkway are a safety problem which Wayne County expects to resolve with the repaving of West River Road.

The remaining priority drainage problems that were identified are still under consideration. The overall drainage management project is the Topographic Mapping of the Island with development showing drainage patterns and computerizing that information. It is an important part of the project and the Township Engineer is coordinating the project with Wayne County to avoid duplication of effort and expense.
