Supervisor's Weekly E-LetterApril 15, 2004Bottle & Can Drive: Why hassle with returning those cans and bottles? TAILS is collecting them to raise money for our animal shelter and related projects. You can drop your cans and bottles anytime at the shelter on Centennial Farm. Please place them in the fenced pen located between the shelter and red barn. Collecting thru April 26th. Mark Your Calendar: Waters Edge New Member Night will be Thurs., April 22nd at the clubhouse on West River Road. Discount memberships for new members will be for sale that night only along with lots of prizes, raffles and fun. Plan to join us. Call 734-675-0777 for more information. Yard Waste Pick-up Now Under WayThe seasonal collection of yard waste along with regular trash pick-up began April 1st. Guidelines for leaving yard waste a the curb are as follows: APRIL 1 THROUGH NOVEMBER 30 Yard waste CANNOT be mixed with normal household trash. West River Road ConnectorThe roadway leading from Parkway to West River just east of the County Bridge was re-opened Wednesday evening (not Tuesday as I had been informed). It had been closed in an attempt to make the Island's main entranceway safer during our heavy sewer construction in the subdivision north of Parkway. The GI road committee, along with Wayne County, is currently studying various options to make the intersection safer and more efficient. Look for more details soon. One option not currently being seriously considered is permanent closure, contrary to the rumors that seem to be circulating. Any interested residents are encouraged to attend the monthly GI Road Committee meetings. West River Road PavingWith the weather improving and asphalt plants set to re-open, it appears the final "wear course" will be placed on the new section of West River (Parkway south) sometime in the first two weeks of May. The work should be completed quickly with just a few lane closures during the actual paving. The county is in the process of surveying West River north of Parkway and securing funding for that project. I anticipate planning to continue during the next year or two with actual reconstruction being at least a 1-3 years away. Walk for the March of DimesPlease join my family in our annual "Walk for Benjamin" on April 25th in at Munson Park in Monroe. Sign up is at 8:15am followed by a group photo 8:30am. Baby Benjamin lost his little life to neural tube disease 6 years ago and our family has marshaled among the largest groups of walkers to help efforts in saving babies each ever since at this event. to begin looking at ways to ferry cars over for a fee? I realize we are
looking into buying the pay bridge, but am curious about our progress
with contingency plans. I'm sure the volume of traffic would create plenty
of revenue to cover some of the costs. In addition, it would offer options
for high volume traffic times. Response from the Supervisor: Rumors seem to be running rampant with regard to the closure of the County Bridge and closure of the West River Road connector to GI Parkway. With regard to the County Bridge, concrete plans for improving the span have not been formulated, although the need for some major work in the next few years is undisputed. It appears that major work (beyond a few afternoon closures for deck maintenance) are at least a year or more in the future. Doug; I agree with the concerns regarding the bridge closings. We
need both, a short term and long term plan to provide adequate travel
to and from the island during the Wayne County Bridge closings. Additional
travel impairment by our neighboring communities like Trenton only makes
things worse. It is the responsibility of Wayne County to provide an alternate
route of travel when the bridge is closed. Why do the citizens have to
wait to pay tolls for the other bridge? Better yet, why do the citizens
have to pay for the alternate travel expense at all? Wayne County has
gotten away with this for to long! The public health, safety and welfare
is of great concern. How about a plan? A plan that alleviate these concerns. It's really too bad that they reopened the West River Road ramp. This Week in Island History April 1935 – The total assessed value for Grosse
