Stealth Aircraft Returning to the Air Extravaganza! You may remember that the appearance of F-117 Stealth fighter that was scheduled for Sunday at last year's Air Extravaganza had to be cancelled because of bad weather. Well, the airshow organizers and the Air Force decided to double the chances that we'd see "stealth" at this year's show! On Saturday, June 19, the Air Force will have an F-117 "strut its stuff" in a series of fly-bys and maneuvers; on Sunday, June 20, we will see a B-2 Stealth bomber! Details about the show are at www.greatlakesairshows.com and www.grosseileairport.com. Advance sale tickets are available at the Airport Administrative Office during business hours, other outlets for advance sale tickets will be announced soon on the air show web site. Herb Fest 2004 - 5th Annual "Glorious Garlic"Grosse Ile Centennial Farm: Saturday, May 15th 10am - 3pm Thoughts on Emerald Ash Borer From Residents Yes the product that helps with the ash tree problem would be wonderful
to be available to residents at cost, there is no need for profit here.
Great Idea though I just read the letter from a resident requesting that the Township be involved in Purchasing a chemical for self treatment of the problem with the this new exotic invader of beautiful and numerous Ash trees. As a Master Gardener being involved with some of the initial research on the damage and possible treatments, I strongly recommend against this suggestion. The liability issue alone should keep us from being involved with this one. Secondly Sevin is a stop gap treatment with dubious if any value to treat existing trees. The insect in it's adult state is active for a longer period than most other pest insects and a topical treatment would require frequent and excessive amounts of chemical to be used. The most recent treatment being recommended is A chemical available for use by licensed applicators which is call by the trade "merit" this is only available to be injected in the trunk of the tree, absorbed and taken up in the cambium layer. The ash borer gets under the outer bark and bores into the inner bark, cambium and destroys the trees ability to move food and liquid from the roots to the upper portion of the tree, causing rather rapid death of the said tree. There is a product available for the home owner sold by Lowe's called Advance tree and shrubs treatment for insect control. It is applied around the trunk of the tree in early spring and is taken up into the tree system. The active chemical is "Imidacloprid". Current researchers believe that if a tree is more than 20% to 25 % damaged it is worthless to treat the tree. This is only cost effective for a homeowner having one or two trees requiring treatment, not a woodlot or hedgerow of trees. A handout available at the Township hall titled "What Can Homeowners Do To Protect Their Trees" Describes this along with mentioning other procedures that they are experimenting with. Elba Resident For the latest info on this see: http://www.msue.msu.edu/reg_se/roberts/ash/ca011403.html This Week in Island HistoryMay 1, 1989 – Four Corners landscaping started with the northwest corner. Compiled by Clare Koester, GI Historical Society Quote of the Week - a personal favorite:"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow, what
a ride!'" Survey Question of the WeekLast week's question: What should be the township's top goal or most important project for the remainder of 2004? Here are the responses: Securing ACCESS and EGRESS from mainland to island. As a community
we need to call a meeting with Wayne County officials. Let it be known
that we pay our taxes on time. We must move forward on building a new
bridge for our community. Complete a bridge plan, using what we have and another for a new
bridge. Own the toll bridge! Start building a new free bridge - over the old one. Make a longer
approach like they do with the Florida bridges. Starting at Jefferson
and going as far down Parkway as needed. It would be high enough so that
it would not have to be opened for boat traffic. It is time to start now
instead of putting money into repairs on the old bridge - then ending
up replacing it anyway. Wider would be nice! GI Public Marina, Launch & Park widening the west river ramp turn lane.....many cars remain in the
traffic lane The number one goal should be to provide a park of some sort for
the residents of GI. I walk every Sunday morning along a different route.
Last Sunday strolled on West River across from the old steel mill. I couldn't
help but notice 2 fingers of water front land that are vacant and look
like public property. It would be nice to put up a couple of benches and
clean up the lots. Not much work is needed if the land is indeed owned
by GI. I would volunteer to help. If that land is not available how about
the land in from of the middle school on East River? How about Hennipin
Point? Is that land usable? I just find it hard to believe we have no
public parks on our island. top goal Tax Relief Cutting spending and taxes on Grosse Ile An Island boat launching ramp has been a desire of the residents
for a long, long time. Why not make the Waters Edge Ramp available, at
a competitive price, to all residents of Grosse Ile, not just members
of Waters Edge. This could be a low investment win win situation: the
ramp already exists, residents get the access we desire and Waters Edge
gets revenue. 2 toll-free bridges Have a question or comment for the Supervisor?
