Supervisor's Weekly E-LetterMarch 7, 2003You are invited to Coffee & Conversation with the Township Board tomorrow morning ( Sat., March 8th) from 8-10am Mochivation Cafe on Macomb Street. Dinner Plans Tonight?Sacred Heart Church is hosting a fish fry dinner tonight, the first Friday of Lent, from 4:30-7 in the Parish Hall. A children's menu will also be available. West River RoadThe county has officially put the reconstruction project from Parkway South out for bid. This is great news! If all goes as expected, a bid will be awarded in the spring for summer/fall construction. The WeekTuesday evening I represented the township at two events: the Constitution Day Dinner and Riverview and GI Educational Foundation fundraiser at the GIGCC, where I was honored to be one of the guest "auctioneers." Joining me at the Foundation event were Trustees Les Neal and Lee Wodjewodzic. Treasurer Kobiljak was honored at the event for his years of service to that organization. Wednesday morning I attending a Downriver Community Conference (DCC) Legislative Committee Meeting with the mayors of Taylor, Southgate and Romulus. Wednesday night I had a meeting regarding Centennial Farm issues. Thursday evening I represented the township at the DCC Board of Directors meeting, and then attended the Township Board budget study session. Setting Speed LimitsThe township under current law has no say in speed limits. Our State Senator, Bruce Patterson, has introduced legislation (SB123) in Lansing to give townships one of three seats on a board which would set speed limits on all roads in the township. The Gov's State Budget Proposalhttp://www.michigan.gov/budget Comments From Residents I am writing to ask for the township to consider trapping some of
the coyotes running around all over the island. Our little dog was killed
by one of these SOB's right in his own backyard (last October). The Ile
Camera did put out an article a month or so later advising residents about
the coyote's presence. Surprise! even this article had a bit of a liberal
tilt advising residents to "shake a can of pennies" at them
to scare them away. Further the article never explicitly mentioned the
danger to infants and other pets as the pests grow more accustom to people.
We all enjoy nature and the environment but something should be done about
the coyote population. I was recently informed that Taylor has set 60
or so traps when a couple of dogs were injured, surely we can do the same. Thank you to the Macomb Resident for sharing the article on the
"Hamilton Hill." That is a great story and our family looks
forward to Grosse Ile's very own "hill." My daughters have enjoyed
sledding at the County Club for many years, even as of last week, and
anticipate the fun they will have at the new hill. This Week in Island HistoryMarch 4, 1947 – Grosse Ile High School won the Class D title in the Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament, beating A.E. Smith (Riverview) 32- 22. Compiled by Clare Koester Lansing Email UpdatesOur State Senator, Bruce Patterson, is beginning a regular update to constituents on happenings in Lansing. It promises to be an excellent way to stay informed on state government. to be added to his list please send email addresses to the following: senbpatterson@senate.michigan.gov Attachment: Advertisement for our July 5-6 air show, or visit http://www.greatlakesairshowscom/ Quotes of the WeekContinuing with Margaret Thatcher, The Downing Street Years: "I have a deep skepticism about the ability of politicians to change the fundamentals of the economy or society: the best they can do is to create a framework in which people's talents and virtues are mobilized and not crushed." "Once the state plays fast and loose with economic freedom, political freedom risks being the next casualty." "The great political reform of the last century was to enable more and more people to have a vote. Now the great reform of this century is to enable more and more people to own property. Popular capitalism is nothing less than a crusade to enfranchise the many in the economic life of the nation." And a few more quotes that I just can't resist adding for your thought:
"I would rather have a German division in front of me than
a French one behind me." "Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without
your accordion." Next Board Meeting:Monday, March 10th 7:30pm (live on GITV) At this meeting the board will approve language to be placed on the June 9th school board ballot asking voters to renew existing police and fire millages. The June 9th election is the only one planned for the year. Email the Supervisor at: doug@downriverfirst.com |
