Supervisor's Weekly E-Letter

May 7, 2004

County Bridge Closure: Deck maintenance is expected to continue on the span again next Tuesday resulting in a complete closure from 9am to 4pm. Please plan to minimize trips to the mainland and expect delays at the Toll Bridge. This work is weather dependant so please also watch the signs on both sides of the bridge for updates on the schedule.

Board Meeting: The Township Board meets Monday at 7:30pm at Township Hall. Watch it live on GI-TV and send feedback during the live meeting to questions@grosseile.com.

West River Road Reconstruction

Contractors have begun installation of the final top coat on the new road. If you can avoid the area please do as traffic stops will be occurring. The West River road connector from Parkway will also be closed periodically to accommodate the paving. For all those inconvenienced during this drawn out construction project, the end is now in sight!

Learn to Swim

Sign up is next weekend for the well respected children's swimming program at Waters Edge. You don't have to be a club member to have your children participate. There are 2 sessions (beginning June 14 and then again on July 5) for kids of all ages and proficiencies. Call 675-0777 for more information.

Downtown Trenton: First Friday Tonight!

Continuing of a practice that has been ongoing for the last several months, a number of Downtown Trenton businesses are offering extended evening hours and a variety of special promotions this Friday, the “First Friday” of May. Participating businesses this month include Sibley’s Hotel Grill, The Framery, Café West, Trenton Flower Shop, Springrove Variety and Scot-Viking Gifts. The stores are open until 9 p.m. The restaurants will be open their normal Friday hours. Marcia Wigginton at Scot Viking reports that she will be offering a no-sew drapery demonstration during the evening. Sibley’s Hotel Grill has live entertainment both Friday and Saturday evening. For more information on First Friday, call 671-0070.

Regarding the Ferry Road resident that was walking along West road across from the Steel mill. They referred to the point of land near Highland Road I believe. That land is privately owned and is cared for by a young man (not the owner) who does a great job. He planted wild flowers, made small trails and put in a bench and a trash bin. We walk there a lot and I've seen him and talked to him. He really likes doing this and we like it too!! The only thing that is bad is the trash that some people throw on the land and especially since he took the time to put in a trash bin. Thank you
West River Road Resident

Dear Supervisor: Please tell the Ferry Road resident we DO have a public park here on the Island. It is called CENTENNIAL FARM.... purchased by our residents with tax money several years ago. Each year we see improvements made for the benefit of all who care to come there to enjoy the sights. I feel the whole Island of Grosse Ile is like a park. Look around you when you drive or walk. See the flowering trees? The purple wildflowers in the woods? Please, NO third bridge. We who have lived here for generations never even wanted streetlights.

More Thoughts on Emerald Ash Borer From Residents

Doug: I appreciate the feedback from the Elba resident relative to the "cons" of using Sevin provided at cost by the Township. However, I am confused at the obvious conflict between the article in the Camera by the Open Space Committee recommending the use of Sevin as supported by MSU and the apparent informed comment by the Elba resident saying that sevin has "dubious if any value to treat existing trees". I am now confused as to what approach to take. I do find it interesting that there isn't anything on the MSU website that I can find suggesting the use of Sevin. Any timely clarification by the Township or the members of the Open Space Committee would be greatly appreciated.

This Week in Island History

May 7, 1920 – Grosse Ile Golf Club purchased home next to the Michigan Central Railroad station. Had been used by the station agents, including Mr. Brodie, the first agent here.
May 8, 1988 – Historic marker was dedicated in front of Rucker-Stanton House. Connie Stanton deBeausset, owner of the home, is a direct descendant of William and Alexander Macomb who purchased Grosse Ile from the Potawatami Indians in 1776.

Quote of the Week

"I am not afraid....I was born to do this."
Joan of Arc

Correction: Last week's issue should have clarified that Footloose was a production solely of the GIHS. Congratulations to all the fine cast members on an outstanding effort!
