The amount will be 2.25 mills, with the amount raised will be used exclusively to make our payment on the loan we received to undertake the nearly $40 million dollar project. April Building Report New home permits = 1, permit value of $6120 Road IssuesThe Township approved an agreement with Wayne County Monday to begin necessary repairs on subdivision roads in the Township. The first of what are expected to be many such projects which will include addressing roads in the HCL Jackson area. Gravel Roads paved last year by petition of property owners included Lake, Rucker and Ruthmere. At Monday's Board meeting the township completed the process by approving the assessment roll setting the specific amount each property owner will pay over the next 15 years to retire the bonds used to fund the projects. A summary of the numbers: Rucker: Project cost = $248,040 with each owner paying $411.85 annually
for 15 years Sean Payton was appointed to fill a vacancy on the GI Road Committee. Township WagesThe Board approved wage adjustments for non-union personnel for the 04-05 fiscal year at our meeting Monday. Wage increases ranged up to a maximum of 2.25%. Contracts with the two township employee unions remain unsettled. Grosse Ile DuatholonGet ready racers! study concerning the connector. While I am not opposed to looking at ways
to improve on the 'occasional' congestion at the Pkwy intersection, ELIMINATION
of the connector ABSOLUTELY should not be an option!! How can the residents
who use that connector two or more times a day, best let our feelings
about the elimination option be heard?? Thanks. DOUG, REGARDING BUDGET PROBLEMS, IF THE POLICE WOULD SETUP RADAR
ON THE NEW WEST RIVER ROAD -- WE WOULD BE "IN THE CHIPS" IN
NO TIME. BY THE WAY - THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE FREE BRIDGE IS POSTED WITH
VERY SMALL SIGNS AT 25 MPH. WE NEED THE COUNTY TO INSTALL REALLY "BIG"
SIGNS -- MAYBE THEN WE CAN MAKE THE WEST RIVER INTERSECTION AT PARKWAY
A LITTLE SAFER - SHORT OF INSTALLING A CAUTION LIGHT. Dear Doug, We just read, with great dismay, your letter regarding
your decision not to run for re-election. As long time Islanders, we have
been very aware of the dedication you have given to this community. The
citizens of Grosse Ile will miss all the efforts and improvements due
to your leadership. You and Kurt have made a wonderful team and we appreciate
all the hard work. Sure wish we could have changed your mind. Our very
best wishes to you. Sure hope we see your name on some ballot in the near
future. Hi Doug, Thanks for the update. I have enjoyed your informative
and witty news letters. And, I wish you the best in success and happiness
in where ever your life takes you. Aw, Doug, I truly am saddened to think that you won't be our Supervisor
much longer. You have done a superb job, and Grosse Ile-ites have much
to thank you for serving us so well. You met the many challenges with
skill and diplomacy. And the many positive changes in our community are
too numerous to mention. I'll miss you! Besides, the E-Squeal is unbeatable!
Thanks for everything you have done.....you "done good". Best
of luck to you in your future career choice. Regarding the Toll Bridge,
we must go for ownership of it. Thanks. I think the sign at the toll bridge was ridiculous....no taste! Doug, So sorry to see that you have decided not to run again for
Township Supervisor. You have done an outstanding job and you will be
missed. We only hope that you arrived to this decision in preparation
for a run for another public office. We need, America needs, thoughtful
public officials who are not only concerned and dedicated but who also
have adopted as their own the philosophy and moral principles upon which
this country was founded. Best wishes. Just out of curiosity, was everything spelled correctly on the sign
put up on the toll bridge? I only ask because it seems very juvenile and
devoid of class. I hope in the future if the Bridge company issues a "statement"
it remembers to use its crayons responsibly next time. I hope this motivates
the Township to get to the Appeals court and gain control of the bridge
soon since the lack of supervision at the toll bridge is very plain after
this stunt. More importantly, I would like to say, for what it is worth,
I respect the job you have done and what you have accomplished during
your tenure. Good luck with all future plans. This Week in Island HistoryMay 13, 1873 – The railroad car ferry Transfer was launched completing the Grosse Ile route of the Canada Southern Railroad. Transfer had three tracks on her 244-foot deck and could carry up to 21 railroad cars. Compiled by Clare Koester, GI Historical Society Photo of the Week
The Grosse Ile Lighthouse with a US Coast Guard vessel in the background. The GI Lighthouse is perhaps the best and most precious symbol of our Island community. As with any historic structure, especially one sitting out on the Detroit River and widely exposed to the elements, it is in constant need of maintenance and protection. The GI Historical Society, along with a tremendous number of volunteers, devote much time and money to this effort. Your support of an endowment campaign to insure that the GI Light is well taken care of forever will be a most worthy charitable donation. The endowment is being funded by donations and the "sale" of the steps inside the structure. Only a few steps remain to be dedicated. Call 675-1250 for more information. Detroit River Clean-upPlease join the effort to keep our river clean. The Friends of the Detroit River will be marshalling volunteers to clean up the shoreline on Sat., May 22nd from 9am to 2pm. Please meet at Trenton Rotary Park. For more info see: www.detroitriver.org. Lansing NotesTwenty-three members of the State Senate have joined to co-sponsor a new law that would ban junk food from public schools and require all school districts to adopt school nutritional policies that ensure students receive healthier meals. The bill has been assigned committee where it faces mixed prospects on passage. Quotes of the Week"We don't know who we are until we see what we can do."
