Supervisor's Weekly E-Letter

September 16, 2004

Mark your calendars: County Bridge Closed Oct. 4th to the 11th!

New Trash Hauler

Abcor was replaced by P&R as the Township's trash hauler beginning Monday after the Township was notified last week by Abcor that it would no longer provide the service. The Township approved a 60 day contact with P&R Monday evening, during which time the DPW Commission will evaluate long term options for the township. Residents are advised to make sure trash is out early in the morning as P&R is a larger firm that will have more trucks on the Island, making pick-up times likely to be earlier in the day than had occurred with Abcor. There will be no change in days of service or the guidelines for trash, recycling and yard waste.

Winter Tax Levy Approved

The Township Board approved the township items which will appear on the December tax bills. The items will total 11.5375 mills and are broken down as follows:

The Email Bag

My last insurance bill included a statutory assessment of $68 for six months. This money is used for people who have serious injuries from an automobile accident, generally where the seat belt was not in use. I hope Southpoint Resident realizes we all pay for his/her negligence.
Glengarry Resident

Doug: Thanks for your constant update. I hope the new Super continues the effort. I am still at a loss why when the access to the Island is impaired due to the closing of the County bridge, Wayne County does not bear some of the responsibility for providing a means on and off the Island. It would seem to me that they should be responsible for working out an agreement with Smoke to cover the cost of operating the "Pay Bridge" during the affected period. Have our lawyers looked into this?
Salisbury Resident

Who on earth was the "wild thing" who thought breaking the law was o.k.? Not wearing a seatbelt is breaking the law. You sure do get some doosies!
Bournemouth Resident

i should have received a warning. u were warned in the ile squeel on the exact days and times they would be watching for people not waring there seats belts. it was not only g. i. that was ticketing drivers it was all downriver. and the police department was doing there job there are paid to do.

Just a few comments regarding the state of affairs on Grosse Ile. The week long closure of the free bridge will be a major distubance to life on the island. Is there any way that the Township could negotiate on everyone's behals to have the pay bridge opened as a free bridge for the week long period ? To compensate the bridge owners, can the county reimburse the owners out of their budget? The grass/weeds on Grays Drive are growing again….months ago, additional dirt was dropped off and leveled, but grass was never planted and currently the area is a mixture of dirt, weeds, and some wild grass. Previously you communicated thqat the Township is required to maintain this area (between the sidewalk and the street), what are the Townships plans currently?
Ferry Road Resident

Doug: We too have been noticing a lot of glass on the courts and roadways after trash day. For the second week in a row we have had to sweep the court so that the kids and the dogs don't end up in the ER.
Halcyon Resident

Quotes of the Week

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet

"Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President Of The United States
