Re: Free Bridge closed in Oct. I would think it would be Wayne County's responsibility to see to it we have free access on and off the island whenever the free bridge is closed. If there was no pay bridge what would they do then....tell us that it's TOO BAD and just stay on the island for a week? Where are our tax dollars going?, don't tell me...to Wayne County Community college that no one one the island even attends. I sure wish there was a way we could opt out of Wayne County and join Monroe County.

Hi Doug, Have you considered asking the toll bridge opertors to collect fares only for cars coming ON the island? Since the folks going off island need to get to work, appointments or the airport on time it would speed things up a lot to allow them to leave without paying the toll. On-coming cars would pay with two tokens or $3.00. This method of fare taking is used all over the country to speed up traffic. Sanibel Island in Florida, the New York bridges and all along the east coast are just a few of the places I'm aware of. Since it would only be used during the time the free bridge is closed, and would speed up the traffic, I would think they would agree to the method.

Dear Mr. Jones, As a Grosse Ile business owner, I'm getting increasingly concerned about all the Township owned bridge shutdowns due to the added cost incurred to our company and the dissatisfaction of our customers. Every time the township bridge closes, we have to pay all of our off island employees and truckers for the toll bridge, there is a huge time delay, and some of our trucks are too big for the toll bridge. This puts a big strain on our business and our customers' relationships. How is this problem going to be dealt with by the Township (I've read a bit in the papers, but perhaps I'm not 100% current)? Can the Township help offset some of our costs? Can we expect several more delays in large clusters such as weeks?

Hi Doug - Can some of our Island residents really be that ignorant of the rules of spelling, grammar and punctuation? It's a hoot reading some of their comments!

This Week in Island History

Sept. 29, 1989 – By a vote of 4 to 3 and after a heated discussion by the audience, the Township Board passed a new zoning ordinance, the first of its kind in more than 20 Years.
Oct. 4, 1815 – A Kickapoo Indian, Akockis, was shot and mortally wounded while leaving Grosse Ile by order of a U.S. soldier.

Quote of the Week

All your life you are told the things you cannot do.
All your life they will say you’re not good enough
Or strong enough or talented enough.
They’ll say you’re the wrong height or the wrong weight
Or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this.
They will tell you ‘no’, a thousand times ‘no’
Until all the no’s become meaningless.
They will tell you ‘no’, quite firmly and very quickly.
And you will tell them ‘YES.’”
