SUPERVISOR’S “E” UPDATE – 21 DECEMBER 2004As promised the Supervisors’ Update has returned. A different name, a slightly different format, monthly versus weekly, and at the beginning, likely not so glitzy. The purpose, however, is the same. The E Update will hopefully keep you informed of those activities, programs, projects and personalities of Grosse Ile. I hope it provides insight. Board Schedule for the First quarter of 2005 January 10th – Regular Board Meeting Board/Commission Study SessionsStarting in 2005 the Board will conduct quarterly Study sessions with the Commissions. These study sessions will allow commission chairs and managers to present to the Board those pending or planned activities and programs within their respective departments. It is my hope that these study sessions enable all participants to be aware of all the many programs and projects which occur on the Island on a daily basis. Residents are invited to attend. The first study session is scheduled for February 28, 2005 at 7:00 pm in the Merle Solomon Board Room at Township Hall. Anybody for a little Tennis, Food and Euchre? What a combination! The Grosse Ile Tennis Center will be hosting a great night of fun and exercise on January 7, 2005 from 7-11pm. This event will be the first of many activities throughout the year at the Center. Tennis will be played from 7-9pm. Euchre will be played from 9-11pm. The cost for Tennis is $15. The cost for Euchre is $15. Bring a dish to pass. You can play either or both. Sign up at the Tennis Center. Any questions please contact Missy Lowler @ 676.3397. Comcast UpdateFred Eaton, the Corporate Affairs Manager for Comcast recently informed me that there are some upcoming changes in Comcast’s channel line up effective January 11, 2005. Several of these changes included enhanced sports stations including a channel dedicated fully to soccer. For further information you can contact 1.888.COMCAST. Wayne County Salting Program 2005As in past years, Wayne County will again be salting our island’s main thorofares to combat the snow and ice which will confront us during the upcoming winter. Last years cost to the Township was $46,000. This year the cost to the Township will be $33,000. December 6th Bridge ForumBy all accounts the Bridge Forum conducted in early December provided insightful questions and responses from the guest panel. Representatives from the County, State, and Federal Government, and the Township’s condemnation counsel, comprised the panel. This forum was just the first of several as we address the remediation needs of the County Free Bridge. The Board and I will continue to cooperatively work with all levels of government to secure Critical Bridge Funding which shall generate the required funds to bring about the much needed repairs of the “Free Bridge.” It is our hope that this funding will be available during 2006/2007. Township Hall Holiday HoursTownship Hall will be closed Friday, December 24, and Monday December 27. It will also be closed Thursday, December 30, and Friday December 31. Township Hall will be open for business on Tuesday, December 28th and Wednesday, December 29th. Township TaxesAttempting to pay your township tax bill prior to the end of the year? Your Township Taxes can be remitted several different ways. Payments can be made at participating banks: Standard Federal Bank, Fifth Third Bank (account holders only), and National City Bank (account holders only). Finally payments can be made at the new township drop box located in the circular drive at Township Hall (please no cash payments). Finally, the Township Treasurer’s office will accept payments in person. The Treasurer’s office will follow the Township’s holiday hours noted above. Tax payments postmarked December 31 will be deemed credited in 2004. Grosse Ile Education Foundation FundraiserThe Foundation’s Mardi Gras 2005 Fundraiser has been set for February 8, 2005 at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club. Much fun will be had for all – new this year is the chance for you to win a one karat diamond ring through a champagne toast. Tickets can be obtained by contacting the Superintendents Office. It is through fundraisers such as this which allow the Foundation to fund programs which enable our schools and community to go “above and beyond.” SSES ProjectAfter a flury of construction throughout the Island at the beginning of year, and numerous shafts popping up along Meridian Road, residents saw the SSES project stop almost over night when the Township’s contractors left the Island. This lack of activity will soon change as the mandated sanitary sewer project will recommence during the first quarter of 2005. Over the last several months the Board and its contractor have diligently worked on modifications to the original contract to move the project forward to completion. The Township will keep those residents affected by this project informed on a regular basis by cable updates, informational letters, and personal visits. Airport Runway 4/22 Resurfacing ProjectRunway 4/22 has now been resurfaced and is open to traffic. The total cost of the project is $2.29 million, with 97.5% of the funds coming from Federal and State Airport Improvement Project grants. The Township’s share of this project is only $72,500, all of which will be funded by Airport-generated revenues (no Township tax revenues will be involved). Temporary runway markings are in place with final markings to be painted in Spring 2005. We’ve been informed by the State Aeronautics Division that well over $1 million in FAA and State grants will be forthcoming this year to resurface the interior taxiways by the end of this year. If all proceeds as expected, all of the runways and taxiways will have been resurfaced with concrete within the last ten years. Township Sled HillThe sled hill will not be open for usage for the 2004/2005 season. The hill will grow slightly larger over the next several months with excavation soils from the SSES project being deposited on the hill. Construction fencing has been placed on the site for safety. The hill will be operational for the winter season 2005/2006. We all look forward to seeing Recreational Manager Tim Rooney take the first sled down the hill! On Behalf of the Township Board I wish all a very happy holiday season and a great New Year!
