THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE APRIL 22, 2005Kurt M. Kobiljak, Township SupervisorRecreation Millage Coffee at Mochavation – the Coffee is on Us!The Township wants to buy you a cup of coffee this Saturday, April 23rd and the following Saturday April 30th from 9am to 11am at Mochavation. In an effort to address any and all questions surrounding the upcoming May 3rd Recreation Millages, Township Officials, Management, and Community Recreation Commissioners will be available to address inquiries about the recreation millages. It is our hope that all who are interested will take us up on our offer to buy you a cup of coffee; or if you have many questions, your first, second or third cups of coffee. Calendar: April 23rd and April 30th, 9am to 11am at Mochavation, 8537 Macomb Street Recreation Department Summer Program Pre-Registration / Open HouseThe Recreation Department is hosting an Open House and Summer Program Pre- Registration this Saturday April 23rd from 1-4 pm. This a great opportunity to meet the staff, learn about Summer Activities and ask specific questions about programs and facilities. Special activities will include golf contests, family karaoke, and facility tours. American Grill will be providing a light lunch offering $1 pop, hot dogs, coffee and $2 hamburgers. Calendar: April 23rd, 1-4 pm Recreation Department at the Waters Edge Site Christmas is just around the Corner – the 2005 Holiday Gift BoutiqueWith the April snow expected this weekend the Grosse Ile Historical Society is inviting all crafters and artists interested in participating in the 2005 Holiday Gift Boutique to bring a sample of their “wares” or products for consideration to the Customs House on May 14th 2005 from 10 am –2 pm. There is no better place to buy your Christmas presents than at the Holiday Boutique. If you have any questions please contact Kathy Walker at 734.671.6898. Calendar: May 14th – 1-4 pm, Customs House, 25000 East River Road & Parkway Island Beautification Litter DrumsThe Beautification Committee has 27 litter drums presently stored at the Centennial Farm ready to catch all of our trash. The Committee has maintained them and by all reports they are in great condition with new paint and decals. You will soon see them popping out around the Island. Please use them - they will surely help keep our island clean. County Bridge Tentative ClosureI have just received word that Wayne County anticipates closing the County (Free) Bridge for approximately 30 minutes on Tuesday, April 26, at 10 am. In an attempt to complete repairs on the bridge, engineers will remove steel parts that need to be manufactured. Closure is weather dependent and not expected to take very long. Please plan accordingly. American Red Cross Disaster Volunteers NeededThe Red Cross is asking 200 Community members to take part in a mock disaster test in order to gauge a community’s readiness for a major crisis. Per the Red Cross Mission they are there to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. As a result the Red Cross is working to ensure that, should the need arise, they are ready to respond. The day of service will be Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 from 8am to 3pm in Detroit. Volunteers may serve in a variety of roles to help simulate a weapons of mass destruction scenario. If you are interested please visit their web site at www.semredcross.org or if you have any questions please contact disasterrex05@semredcross.org Calendar: May 11th 8am to 3pm Downtown Detroit Island Girl Scout receives Gold AwardCongratulations go out to our own Island Girl Scout Sarah Schmidt. On Sunday, May 15, 2005 an important event will take place in Detroit. The Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit Council, the seventh largest Council in the country ( 34,000 girls), will be recognizing Senior Girl Scouts from its council who have earned the Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest honor. Good Job Sarah! Detroit River International CrossingThe Michigan Department of Transportation is conducting its second meeting of the Local Advisory Council this coming Wednesday April 27th at 7 pm at the Southgate Holiday Inn located at 17201 Northline Road, Southgate, Michigan. A meeting agenda has not been presented to my office as of yet, however upon receipt it will be made available at the Supervisor’s Office. More information on this effort can be found at www.partnershipborderstudy.com. The Township will again be in attendance at this meeting to vocalize its opposition to this proposed project. Island residents should become familiar with this effort for one of the options proposed is a bridge that will span over the north end of Grosse Ile. Calendar: April 27th 7pm, Southgate Holiday Inn Millage Rates in Downriver – Take a look at where Grosse Ile ranksWith a great deal of focus surrounding the Township Board initiatives of removing a millage, (the 1.75 Road Millage) or proposing a new millage (the .75 recreation program millage), where does Grosse Ile rank in comparison to ten other local communities and their millage rates? The following is a quick overview and clarification as to where Grosse Ile stands: 2004 Homestead Mill Rates School Board ElectionMay 3rd is an important day on Grosse Ile not only because of the very integral recreation millage election, but also because on the very same day the School Board election will be conducted. This is the annual election for Grosse Ile Township Schools. There are three individuals running to fill two positions on the Board of Education – they are Logan (Tom) Burkhart, Gregory Goyert and Suzanne Sassack. Besides the special election for the recreation proposals, please cast your vote for your school board members – the two successful candidates will surely play a significant role during their four year terms. May 3rd Election InformationPolling places: Absentee BallotsClerk’s office will be open Saturday, April 30th (9am – 2pm) to accept and process requests in person for absentee ballots. Last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is 2 pm on Saturday April 30th. Electors may also vote by absentee ballot in the Clerk’s Office until 4 m on Monday, May 2, 2005. Ballots must be received in the Township Clerk’s office by 8 pm on Election Day, Tuesday, May 3, 2005 in order to be counted. Township Board MeetingThe next regularly scheduled Grosse Ile Township Trustees Board Meeting is set for April 25, 2005 @ 7 pm at Township Hall.
