THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE MAY 9, 2005

Kurt M. Kobiljak, Township Supervisor

County Bridge Closure

We recently confirmed with Wayne County that the County Bridge will be closed tomorrow, May 10th from 9am to 2pm. This closure is based upon the County’s continued efforts to remediate the mechanism of the bridge which will include doing some “forming” and taking respective measurements. Please take the necessary time to plan for this closure.

State Revenue Sharing Cuts

On April 27th the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government sent a Budget proposal to the full Senate Appropriations Committee, Senate Bill 272, that includes a cut of $22.4 million dollars or a 5% cut of statutory revenue sharing. This cut in revenue sharing is a departure from the normal course of cuts from Lansing. Historically in order for the Governor to present a budget, the Governor would cut from the state revenue sharing “account.” Senate Bill 272 is the result of the appropriations subcommittee shifting funds within the proposed budget, which had been presented by the Governor without any cuts from State Revenue Sharing. This action is significant. Many express that this action is an indication that State Revenue Sharing will likely be phased out in the years, which will follow. The net affect on the township will be a loss of state revenue sharing funds in the amount of approximately $45,000.00.

International Bridge

At its April 25th 2005 meeting the Township Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a resolution vehemently opposing any type of International Bridge on, near, or over the Township of Grosse Ile. If anybody is interested in receiving a copy of the Resolution please feel free to contact Barb Thornley @ 676-4422 Ext 210.

The next International Bridge Public Hearing is set tentatively for June 30 @ at Yack Arena in Wyandotte at 7pm. This is another round of public hearings which are being conducted to entertain residents’ positions and concerns in relation to this project. If you are able, please attend this next round of public hearings.

HerbFest 2005

HerbFest 2005 is coming this Saturday May 14th from 10am to 3pm at the Grosse Ile Centennial Farm. This is a great event for the family. This year you will be able to participate in the “Taste of Tuscany” by visiting a Tuscan Village, an Italian Marketplace, Tuscan Café, Village artists and a children’s garden activities. I have been told that they additionally ordered the warm Mediterranean sun for all who attend. Also take the time to stop at the Animal Shelter – TAILS will be selling hotdogs and Italian sausages and you can win some terrific raffle baskets. Any questions please feel free to go to the Herb Society’s web site at www.giherbsoc.homestead.com.

Community Alert System – Safe & Sound

You can never be too prepared. Through the efforts of Fire Chief Murdock, the Fire Commission, and the entire Fire Department, a terrific package of information is available for residents. This packet includes information on “Sheltering in Place”; “First Call”, the Township’s Community Alert System (a township sponsored telephone service to notify all Island Residents in the case of an emergency); a Family Emergency Preparedness Disaster Supplies Kit; and information regarding the Township’s Radio Station 1700 AM. Please call the Fire Department if you are in need of any of these important brochures or pamphlets.

Downtown Development Authority (DDA)

The next DDA meeting is May 18, 2005 at 7:30 pm at the Grosse Ile Township Hall. Your input as to what steps the DDA should take to better the Macomb Business District would be appreciated. If interested please take the time to attend this meeting or contact me at my office, 676-4422 Ext. 215.

Forest Service Centennial

In 2005 the USDA Forest Service commemorates a century of dedicated service and caring for the nation’s forests and grasslands. I recently received word that on May 11 at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, the Forest Service is inviting those who are interested to attend the Centennial and the Eastern Region’s expanded Urban Connections partnership with Greenfield Village. A 1906 Forest Ranger on horseback will be on hand at the event to share stories about working on the National Forests during those early days, as well as to discuss information on fire prevention and early reforestation efforts.
