Grosse Ile Township Supervisor
Sewer project moves forward
As you may have noticed, the contractors handling the Township’s
sewer rehabilitation have restarted their efforts along Meridian Road.
Even though there is pending litigation between the Township and the Contractor
D’Agostini, the project is being continued per the terms and conditions
of our underlying contract. Some facts regarding this stage of the SSES
project:
Pipe required to be installed: 22,533 feet
Pipe already installed: 7,638 feet
Percentage completed: 34%
Shafts required: 61
Shafts excavated: 26
Percentage shafts excavated: 43% (no manhole)
Percentage shafts excavated: 25% (with manhole)
The Township has been told that the contractor will add an additional
crew in August to move the project forward at a quicker pace. This second
tunneling crew will start the Thorofare Road tunnel where they left off
last fall. The Township, in conjunction with the contractor will be working
diligently to remove as many shafts as possible during the summer months.

Loyal to the End
For years an Akita named Hachiko followed his master Professor Eisaburo
Ueno to the Shibuya Train Station in Tokyo then waited at the station
until the professor returned from work at night. In 1925 Ueno died at
the University and never returned home. Hachiko waited at the train station
until midnight and then returned the next day and waited again. He returned
to wait for his master every day until he died in1934 nine years after
the death of his owner.
Hachiko’s loyalty made him famous throughout Japan and when he
died a statute honoring him was erected in Shibuya Station. The Station
has held an annual memorial service ever since.
