International Bridge Meetings – Mark your Calendars!
Over the next two weeks, Island residents will have the opportunity
to become even more informed on this very important issue via three scheduled
meetings:
- Monday August 22, 2005: The Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber
is hosting a legislative forum with Dan Stamper (President of the Detroit
International Bridge Company) and Paul Tait (Executive Director of SEMCOG)
to discuss the proposed secondary crossing to Canada. The event will
be held at Crystal Gardens from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Registration is
available at the door.
- Thursday August 25, 2005: Senator Patterson and myself have requested
a Senate Transportation Committee Meeting with MDOT and MDOT Director
Gloria Jeff to discuss the international bridge and capacity issues.
This event will be held at the Grosse Ile High School Auditorium at
7:00 pm. There is no cost to attend this event.
- Wednesday August 31, 2005: MDOT is hosting a scoping meeting from
4:00 –6:00 pm. This meeting is proposed to provide the opportunity
for federal, state, and local cooperating agencies to review and comment
on the scoping document prepared to help guide MDOT’s study process
for a secondary crossing. This meeting is open to the public. The consultant
will even cover your parking fees.
Simsonian 5K Kick-Off Classic No. 3
Mark you calendars for this annual event which takes place this Saturday,
August 20, 2005 with the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk starting at 8:30 am and the
5K race starting at 9:00 am. The race takes place at the Grosse Ile High
School 7800 Grays Drive. Registration can take place the day of the event.
Don’t miss out! All proceeds go to the Steve Sims Leadership Scholarship
Fund.
The First Shaft is Closed
As has been updated over the last several weeks, the SSES sewer project
has been making steady progression. One benefit from this progression
is the removal of shafts, which we have had to encounter on Meridian and
Thorofare Roads. During this last week we saw the closing of one shaft
with two or three shafts to be closed over the next week. Progress is
slow but hopefully we can get Meridian Road back into good shape and clean
up the residents’ yards, which have been affected by this construction
project.
Stepfamily Day
The celebration of Stepfamily Day will be September 16, 2005. The Township
Board of Trustees passed a resolution at its July meeting honoring the
existence of Stepfamily Day, which will be included in a book that will
be passed around the State of Michigan. Stepfamily Day is supported by
the Stepfamily Association of America and has been celebrated nationwide
the past nine years.
Concerts on the Commons
During the summer months, the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts sponsors
the “Concert on the Commons” each Sunday evening from 6:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the Macomb Street Commons, corner of Meridian and
Macomb. Come and enjoy the wonderful music with your friends and neighbors.
Refreshments are available for purchase.
Water’s Edge Update
The Township Board has determined to keep Water’s Edge fully functional
for the 2006 golf, swimming and marina season. The current occupants of
the restaurant have decided to leave and the township has already begun
the search for a new vendor to run this facility that will best service
our residents and users of the club. The budgetary situation at Water’s
Edge will continue to be monitored closely by Township Management. This
will include additional cost savings and new programs to generate additional
revenue. One idea discussed is creating “public seasonal passes”
for the pool so that more families can take advantage of our wonderful
pool facility. Membership to date is 526 members. Rounds of golf to date
6,831. Both numbers are above our expectations per our adjusted budget.
DDA Land Acquisition
The Township DDA recently acquired, through the Wayne County Treasurer,
one parcel of vacant land on Macomb. The plans for the property will be
developed by the DDA and announced at a later date.
Lady Devils Basketball – the Great BASK-HETTI Bash
Help support our girls’ basketball teams (from 7th grade to Varsity)
on Saturday, August 20 by having a good old fashion spaghetti dinner with
them at Centennial Farm from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. This fundraiser will
help continue the great tradition of girls’ basketball on Grosse
Ile. Questions can be directed to Judy Makins @ 675-9869 or Michele McNally
@ 671-8694.
Check out their website at www.geocities.com\gigirlsbasketbal1200S\varsity.
Take the time and effort to attend, it will mean a lot to our girl basketball
players!
Power Outages
DTE has been notified about frequent power outages at the north end
of the island. A monitor has been put in place to help determine the exact
source of the problem and DTE is currently studying the data from the
monitor. In addition, a DTE representative is planning to attend the September
12 Board Meeting to give an update on the situation.
Please check out the following article on the current state of power
outages in the state from the Detroit Free Press on Monday, August 15,
2005: www.freep.com/news/mich/power15e_20050815.htm
V-J Day
As a follow up last Sunday, August 14, 2005 was the 60th anniversary
of V-J Day. The surrender by the Japanese on that day brought to an end
World War II. We should remember all those who served and died in this
terrible conflict. Our freedom is owed to the few who do so much for so
many. (borrowed from a quote by Winston Churchill). Even if after the
fact, I thought a minute to reflect on this important day was necessary.
First Day of School!
August 24, 2005 is the day everyone on Grosse Ile has been waiting for
since June 16, 2005. It is the day all Grosse Ile kids go back to school!
So that means watch for kids walking or riding bikes in the early morning
hours and for kids getting on or off school buses. Safety First!!!! And
if you see Katie Kobiljak pay particular attention to her new fashionable
book bag and lunch box – she is quite proud of it!
This Day in History
Explorer Meriwether Lewis, who joined William Clark to blaze a trail
across the continent to the Pacific Ocean, was born on August 18, 1774
near Charlottesville, Virginia.
