THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE October 12, 2006
Kurt M. Kobiljak, Township Supervisor
Purple Heart Recipient
Congratulations to Frank Zito on being awarded the Purple Heart at Monday’s Board Meeting. Congressman John Conyers bestowed the oldest military honor on Mr. Zito. If you see Frank in the community please thank him for his service to our country.
Wayne County Bridge Update
Per my discussions with Wayne County this project is still slated for April 1st 2007. The Township and the County will have a project meeting in November to review the status and progression of the project.
Van Horn Road Update
Per discussions with the City of Trenton Daimler Chrysler has indicated that they are still interested in the Trenton site but are also reviewing other sites. Many are of the opinion that the plant will likely not be located at the Trenton site however that is merely speculation. It is my guess that we will hear Daimler Chrysler’s decision after the November election.
Evacuation Seminar
Duncan Murdock and myself had the opportunity of attending an Evacuation Seminar for emergency planning on Monday, October 9. We will take what we learned and use the information to better enhance our evacuation process and procedures. Prior to the end of the year the Board will discuss and update the Island’s emergency and evacuation plans. This may additionally include the installation of another siren on the island for better sound coverage.
Commission/Committee Study Session
The next scheduled Commission/Committee Study Session will be on Monday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Board Room at Township Hall. Police, Fire and Planning Commissions and the Airport Advisory Committee will provide updates for the Board.
Church Road/Meridian Road Intersection Light
With the pole being recently delivered, the yellow blinking intersection light at Meridian and Church Road will be reinstalled by Wayne County. Lane markings will also be painted by the County as soon as the weather allows.
Pavement on Horsemill Road (Presbyterian Church)
The paving on Horsemill is now complete – no more barrels - no more barricades. Karl Travis’ prayers have been answered.
SSES Project @ Church Road
The last remaining street disturbance for the sewer project can be found at Church and Thorofare Roads. In order to fit into the system, boring is being conducted under the canal near the Church Road bridge.
Next Board Meeting
The next scheduled meeting of the Township Board of Trustees will be on Monday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Bridge Over Canal
Many have asked when the bike path bridge over the Horsemill Road canal will be completed. We are working with Army Corp of Engineers and MDEQ to work a plan to have a little more asphalt bike path and a little less wood bridge/decking. Restoration is still ongoing by the contractor. We hope to complete this project by early November.
Planning Commission appointment
Jim Davis was appointed to the Planning Commission at the October 9 Township Board Meeting. If you see Jim thank him for volunteering to this important commission.
Trick or Treat Hours
Katie, Stefan and Hayden are pleased that the Board of Trustees have designated Tuesday, October 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. as the official Trick or Treat hours for Grosse Ile Township. Please be careful and watch out for ghosts and goblins!
DTE Update
Grosse Ile is connected to the Detroit Edison electric service through three cables located below the Detroit River at the Trenton Channel. One of the cables (which was 55 years old) failed recently and Detroit Edison has identified the cable problem at 400 feet offshore. The electrical load on the island is such that only one cable is required to serve the island, except during peak demand periods during the summer. As such, no sustained power outages have resulted from the cable failure. Although Detroit Edison will replace the entire cable, it will take several months before the cable can be obtained. The project, which will involve replacing 3,300 feet of cable, represents a $2 million investment. In the meantime, Detroit Edison has developed contingency plans and pre-work is in progress to expedite restoration in the event a contingency plan must be implemented. Detroit Edison will continue to keep township officials apprised of its progress.
Timing wise – directional boring will commence in January and take 1 to 2 weeks. The bore will go from Ferry/West River to Riverside/St Joseph in Trenton. The cable will then be arriving in March for installation.

From Louis L’Amour – Victory is not won in miles but in inches. Win a little now, hold ground, and later win a little more.
This Day in History
In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived with his expedition in the present-day Bahamas.
A sailor on board the Pinta sighted land early in the morning of October 12, 1492 and a new era of European exploration and expansion began. The next day, 90 crewmembers of Christopher Columbus’s three-ship fleet ventured onto the Bahamian island of Guanahani ending a voyage begun nearly ten weeks earlier in Spain.
