THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE OCTOBER 4, 2007
Kurt M. Kobiljak, Grosse Ile Township Supervisor
Township Road Projects
During my most recent State of the Township address, I indicated the need to have the Township reinvest road millage monies back into the roads which service our residents. As a result, the Township Board has approved the engineering of many of our roadways and intersections as well as initiated a road repair program using Wayne County Maintenance as well as private contractors to bring our roadways back into good condition. Residents have already seen the expanded Church Road /Meridian intersection which has made it easier for school buses, fire vehicles and larger trucks to navigate the once “tight” intersection.
More specifically, this Friday will be the pre-construction meeting which will initiate the road repair work at Fairway/Golfview Estates road system located just off Ferry Road. With a developer which has disappeared and the County not able to take jurisdiction of the road, the Township Board has agreed to aid the residents which have been confronted with a dangerous, almost impassable roadway system. This project has been in the works for a great while and I was pleased that the County agreed with my suggestion to pay for 50% of the construction costs to aid our residents. With the pre-construction meeting being held, the construction work will commence shortly and put Township resident road millage monies back in the roadways where it belongs.
2007 Grosse Ile Homecoming is Here!
Despite the unusually warm, summer like weather, 2007 Grosse Ile Homecoming
Festivities are upon us once again. The Homecoming Parade will take its traditional route down Macomb Street tomorrow starting at 4:30 p.m. The GIHS Varsity Football game will begin at 7:00 p.m. which will include a fabulous half time show by the GIHS Red Devil Marching Band and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. Come on out not only for the parade but for the game to cheer our Red Devils on to victory and to meet up with old friends and acquaintances who make the trip back to Grosse Ile for this special time of year.
Grosse Ile has many incredible families but this Homecoming night, when you attend the Homecoming football game pay particular attention to the high school marching band. What you will see doesn’t happen too often. On the field you will see two Township families that individually each have three of their children in the marching band. The families, the Scheibers and the Taylors, will be contributing their six children to entertaining you during the game and the halftime celebration. The Scheiber’s three boys will be on the field specifically Bryan, a senior (trumpet), Christopher, a sophomore (trombone) and Kevin, a freshman (saxophone). The Taylor’s will field Courtney, a senior (clarinet), Travis, a junior (bass drum) and Emma, a freshman (saxophone). When you see the Schreiber’s or the Taylor’s thank them for talented children.
Township Board Meeting Schedule
The Grosse Ile Board of Trustees Meeting, previously scheduled for Monday, October 8, 2007, has moved its business meeting this month to October 22, 2007 at
7:30 p.m.
Grosse Ile Township Deer Population
There has been great discussion over the last several years regarding the deer population on the Island. One of the more serious areas relates to the airport and plane safety on the runways. As a result, the Airport Office has requested that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) visit the Township Airport at the end of the month to conduct an on-site investigation which would entail analysis of the habitat, a focus on the deer population and make recommendations for any potential alterations of the habitat so that the Airport can determine the next step in addressing the issue. In relation to remaining areas on the Island, the Animal Control Officer and the Police Commission have discussed the matter on a regular basis and addressed their thoughts on the population issue as well.
In tandem we know the heavily trafficked routes for the deer on the Island and are working with the County to obtain additional deer crossing signage. Please recognize with the mating season starting during the middle of October that deer will likely be moving even more near or around our heavily used roadways – please be careful throughout the day especially in the early morning and early evening hours. Slow down and stay alert!
Fire Department Open House
The annual event we all wait for is here! The Grosse Ile Fire Department will hold its annual Open House next Wednesday, October 10, 2007 from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Public Safety Building. Chief Murdock tells me that many fun things are planned for both adults and children. Smokey the Dog, car cutting, hose training for the little ones, blood pressure readings, handouts for adults as well as the kids, bake sale, hot dogs and as always, an up close and personal view of the fire trucks! Katie, Stefan and Hayden love this annual event and can’t wait until next Wednesday. It is always educational, informative but most of all a fun time with your fire department.
