THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE November 9, 2007

Kurt M. Kobiljak, Grosse Ile Township Supervisor

Project /Program Update

With the many projects and programs the Township is presently engaged in, the following, in brief form, hopefully gets all E Update readers the chance to get an overview of the most recent status of our projects and programs:

• The new trash/recycling hauler, Capital Waste Inc., is set to beginning serving the Island November 15th.

• The last DDA Farmer’s Market was conducted prior to Halloween. I am pleased with how the markets evolved over the summer months and look forward to next year’s markets. We will commence the markets next year beginning in May 2008

• The West River Road ramp project renovation is commencing and will be completed prior to the Free Bridge reopening.

• A landscaping redevelopment plan of the entire Free Bridge entranceway will soon be presented to the Township Board for approval. With this plan, the entranceway of the south end to the Island will be beautifully enhanced as it never has been before.

• The DDA will present the redevelopment of its entranceways to the Township Board for approval at its December 10th meeting. This project will be funded fully by DDA funds and will create an entranceway to the Macomb Business District via an expansive plan worked on by the DDA over the last year in concert with a landscape architect.

• The continued reconstruction of the roadways at the Golf View Shores/Grosse Ile Manor subdivision (off of Ferry Road) is well under way with paving to commence shortly.

• The Community Recreation Department and the Township, by obtaining a recent $50,000 grant, will begin focusing its efforts at the Water’s Edge site with the installation of sidewalks, ADA paths, parking lot renovations and additional capital improvements at the site.

• The County has recently approved the reconfiguration of Four Corners (Parkway / Meridian Road) for the better flow of traffic.
• The Township continues to work with DTE to consistently upgrade the electrical service on the Island and will have DTE at its November 13 Board meeting to acknowledge the next step in DTE’s program to upgrade the electrical service throughout the Island.

• Free Bridge reconstruction is on track right now. Per my discussions with the County, it is still on path for completion in mid-December. I have received updated photos of the construction project and we have placed them on cable and provide some in this E Update. I will be visiting the bridge for my own review Friday and will share my observations at the upcoming Board meeting. We have also commenced discussions with the County as to how to celebrate the reopening of the bridge and will keep all informed.

Wayne County Community College Renewal Millage Update
This last Tuesday, an election which dealt with the Community Colleges request to go out to the voters three years in advance was rejected by Island voters 1,190 to 175. This defeat was not only on the Island but also throughout the County. When I first heard about this millage renewal proposal, and my subsequent request to the board to bring a resolution opposing the same, it had no inference to the school, the educators or the students. My opposition, and clearly many others, was that it was disingenuine to go out three years in advance of the millages expiration for no other reason than to be able to budget it’s capital improvements well in advance. I appreciate the other communities which followed the Township’s lead, and for those who took the time to vote on Tuesday.
The unofficial Wayne County results are 50,601 for to 76,823 against passage of the WCCCD millage renewal.

Island Coney’s Thanksgiving Event
The Island Coney is saying “Thank you” to the Township Community. As one of the new businesses on Macomb Street, on November 21st, the day before Thanksgiving (Thanksgiving Eve), the Island Coney is providing FREE TURKEY DINNERS from noon to 5pm. This offer has very few restrictions (excludes drinks, no carry outs) and is good while supplies last. As a special treat I have the pleasure of working in the kitchen as a guest cook on that day. The Island Coney looks forward to seeing you on November 21st!

Results from the last Supervisor’s Island Question
The last Supervisor’s Island Question was “How would you like the Township to celebrate the reopening of the Wayne County Free Bridge upon completion of the remediation project?” Here are a few of the replies:

• “Colorful, beautiful fireworks!”
Parke Lane Resident

• “Have a “Bridge Walk” during daylight hours so that interested people have an “up close” view and appreciation for the completed bridge.”
Hampton Road Resident

• “A ribbon cutting ceremony and a raffle to be held for the right to be the first car to cross. Money could go to a deserving Island group.”
Southpointe Road Resident

• “Marching Band from Grosse Ile and Trenton meeting in the middle with a banner cutting ceremony and a new American Flag hoisted above the bridge.”
Groh Road Resident

• “No celebration. The money can and should be spent on more worthy projects or resident needs.”
Island Estate Resident
