It is the holiday season on Grosse Ile and what better way to kick off one of the most festive times of the year by celebrating the arrival of Santa Claus and the Township Tree Lighting ceremony o n Macomb Street. It is time for the 19th Annual Island Glow Holiday Celebration. The festivities will begin with entertainment from the Downriver Brass, G.I.H.S. Marching Band, G.I. Children’s Choir and Dance Grosse Ile at the East Macomb Street Stage from 6:30 p.m. – 7:40 p.m. which will be located in the Township Parking Lot across from Prudential Landmark Properties. A tent will be provided for protection from Mother Nature along with hot chocolate. Santa Claus will arrive by courtesy of the Grosse Ile Fire Department at 7:40 p.m. After Santa Claus receives the key to all the hearts of Grosse Ile Children, let’s stroll with Santa Claus to Perdino’s for the Township Tree Lighting ceremony. After the tree lighting, visit any one of our Macomb Street Businesses by looking for the snowflakes in either the windows or on mailboxes. Those businesses will be open for retail business and cheer until 9:30 p.m.! Free Carriage Rides and strolling musicians and carolers will round out a delightful holiday evening.
Brunch With Santa
After all of the fun events Friday night, Santa will be up bright and early on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Centennial Farm where he will meet and greet all the good boys and girls of Grosse Ile. Brunch with Santa will be at 11:00 a.m. Each child will visit with Santa and receive a keepsake photo. We will also have time for games and prizes! Advanced tickets only for this event. No tickets will be sold at the door. Please contact the Recreation Department (675.2364) for ticket availability.
Wayne County Bridge Construction Update
Wayne County released the following press release on Monday, November 26 regarding the construction progress on the Wayne County Bridge:
"Grosse Ile Bridge work continued this past holiday weekend.
v Workers continued repairs and select replacement of structural steel members, cleaning and painting of new steel and welding of deck material to the steel support members.
v Approximately 85% of the deck material is in place, with approximately 20% permanently fixed (welded).
v Sidewalk material and decorative railings are yet to be installed.
The project is on schedule, but remains at the mercy of Mother Nature because several work operations are weather and temperature dependent.”

Click on “Grosse Ile Bridge Project Updates.” Representatives from Wayne County have been invited to the Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, December 10 to give an update on the construction progress.
T.A.I.L.S. Open House and Pet Photos With Santa
T.A.I.L.S. will be holding their 10th Annual Open House on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Centennial Farm. The open house will offer the Christmas Shoppe for your shopping pleasure, tours of the animal shelter facility, a raffle and of course, pet photos with Santa! For a $5 donation, you will receive a photograph of you and your pet with Santa Claus mounted in a lovely holiday card. Katie, Stefan and Hayden will be taking “Mr. Moe” their long eared rabbit for his picture with Santa.
Ten years ago this month, myself and the other initial founders of T.A.I.L.S. opened their doors to a new Township Animal Shelter at Centennial Farm. The shelter is fortunate to have these past 10 years the support of such a caring community as Grosse Ile which enables us to protect, care, and heal the animals who are brought to the shelter. I am sure there will be the perfect stocking stuffer for you to find at the shelter. Lots of new pets to get acquainted with and adopt. A kitten or dog will not only make your holiday season complete but the animals will continue to thank you with unconditional love for years to come.
Senior Holiday Brunch
The Annual Senior Holiday Brunch will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. at Centennial Farm. A delicious lunch will be served, live entertainment by Eddie O and prizes to raffle off is just part of the fun and holiday spirit in store for you. Tickets are $10 and are only sold in advance. Grosse Ile Historical Society Gift Boutique
Yes, it is open! Grosse Ile Historical Society’s Annual Holiday Gift Boutique at the Customs House, located behind the Historical Museum on the corner of East River Road and Parkway is waiting for you. Find many wonderful and unique gifts for the special people in your life or for yourself. The boutique will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 23 with hours each Friday 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., also on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. This is truly unique to Grosse Ile. If you have never visited the boutique, take the time and effort this year.
St. James Greens Market
The St. James Greens Market will be open for business on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This very popular market is celebrating its 79th season this year. Come to the market to browse for tabletop trees, wreaths, evergreen roping, swags, mantelpieces, loose greens and much, much more. Whether you wish to be creative or want to purchase a ready-made item, this will be the place for you to shop.
Nutcracker Suite – Dance Grosse Ile
The Southeastern Michigan Classical Ballet Presents “The Nutcracker Ballet” on Friday, December 7th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 8th at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The shows will be presented at the Trenton High School Auditorium located at 2601 Charlton Road in Trenton. Accompanying the ballet will be the Southern Great Lakes Symphony. Tickets are available by contacting Dance Grosse Ile at 362.0880, Grosse Ile Recreation Department at 675.2364, Ile Camera or can be purchased at the door on performance date. Tickets are $20.00 per person with the Saturday matinee tickets at $16.00 per person (no orchestra at the Saturday matinee performance). What a wonderful way to get into the spirit of the holiday by enjoying this enchanting and time-honored tale.
Metro Shores Ballet – The Nutcracker
Metro Shores Ballet will present two performances of The Nutcracker Ballet on Saturday, December 15 at 4:00 p.m. and December 16 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be held at the Grosse Ile High School Auditorium. Tickets are$12 for adults, $10 for children and are available at Grosse Ile Academy of Dance or by calling 676.7233. If you look very closely, you may even notice a small Kobiljak.
Ambassador Bridge Gateway Project
As I announced at the last Board meeting, the Ambassador Bridge Gateway Project is underway and will be affecting area freeways in 2008 and 2009. The Gateway Project is a major economic development project connecting area freeways to the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit's Mexicantown neighborhood. It includes:
Reconstructed freeways and a new interchange for I-75 and I-96
A pedestrian bridge connecting east and west Mexicantown
A redesigned Ambassador Bridge Plaza
Complete closure of I-75 between Clark Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard is scheduled for February 25, 2008 thru December 2009. I-96 between Warren Avenue and I-75 will close for approximately 90 days in the summer of 2008. A website has been set up to keep residents informed on the progress of the project:

YARD WASTE PICKUP EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 14, 2007
Yard Waste Pick Up has been extended until December 14, 2007. No leaf should be spared on Grosse Ile from visiting a good compost pile or leaf bag. Please contact the Public Works Department at 676.5959 with any questions.
Guidelines for curbside recycling have been sent to all residents from Capital Waste, Inc. Trash and Yard Waste Guidelines are also available for all residents. Copies can be obtained at Township Administration or Public Services at 9601 Groh or the Public Works Building at 8555 Groh.
