THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE April 5, 2007

Kurt M. Kobiljak, Grosse Ile Township Supervisor

DTE Energy Project Update

As residents have noticed, the DTE Energy crew is currently working up and down Macomb Street pulling in the cable as part of the upgrade to the Macomb Street Station. Crews will begin splicing the cable this week.

As announced at the Annual Meeting on Monday, March 26, DTE will shut down all electricity to Grosse Ile beginning at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2007. Power is scheduled to be returned by 7:00 a.m. that same day. The reason for the shut down is to fire up the new cable from the Trenton Slocum station to Grosse Ile. This is cable which is located under the Trenton Channel that replaced the cable that failed last fall. In case of bad weather, a rain day of Sunday, April 29, 2007 has been selected. The times of the shutdown (1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.) will be the same on the rain date. Scheduled for the weekend of May 5th, DTE will energize the new position for the cable over at the Slocum station and the new transformer will be up and running.

My office will keep residents informed of any changes to the day or time of the shutdown as we are notified by DTE Energy. Please share this information with your friends and neighbors.

Wayne County Bridge Closure Update

Bids for the remediation of the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge are to be returned to Wayne County no later than April 6, 2007. A contractor will then be selected and approved by the Wayne County Commission. As soon as a construction/closure start date has been announced, residents will be informed. As of today, no definite date has been announced.

I still receive inquiries as to whether the bridge will actually be closing this spring. Based upon discussions with Wayne County officials, I feel certain that this project, contingent upon final Wayne County Commission approval, will commence late April or early May 2007. Should you have any questions please contact me at 734.676.4422 ext 215.

Township Offices Closed

The Township Offices will be closed tomorrow, Friday, April 6, 2007, in honor of the Good Friday Holiday. Township Offices will reopen on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 8:00 a.m.

Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy Update

The Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy has a new president. Congratulations to Liz Hugel as she leads this fine organization in 2007. As a founding member and past president of GINLC, I feel that there is no better service organization on Grosse Ile. An Earth Day 2007 celebration is scheduled for Sunday, April 22 at Centennial Farm from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Electronics recycling, Earth Day Activities, soil testing and a guided trail walk (weather permitting) are just a few of the activities scheduled. For membership information, please call Greg Roginski at 734.676.6554.

Commission/Committee Update

At the Annual Meeting on Monday, March 26, the Board of Trustees thanked all those Grosse Ile residents who serve and volunteer their time on a commission or committee for the Township. Many programs and projects would not happen except for the dedication of these fine men and women. At this time, there are openings on several commissions or committees. Please contact Carol Knopp at 676.4422, ext. 210 for the current openings and an application. There are many areas of interest and the most important qualification is the willingness to serve your community.

Water’s Edge 2007 – Have you seen Water’s Edge recently? Stay to Play!

It is not too late to sign up for a Water’s Edge membership for 2007. Water’s Edge is ready to begin a new year and we are waiting for you to sign up today. With the upcoming Wayne County Parkway Bridge closure be sure to enjoy the golf course and swimming pool at Water’s Edge for your recreational needs and avoid going off the island. The nine-hole course, public swimming pool, driving range and great restaurant on site make this a simple choice – odds are if you visit and experience the benefits – you will stay and play. Call the Recreation Department today at 675.2364 for more information on membership rates and values.

A Good Dad Saying

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure." Quote by Colin Powell, born on this day in 1937.

This Day in History

Conservationist, civic leaders, and government officials submitted testimony before Congress in favor of the establishment of the National Park Service on April 5 and 6, 1916. The congressional debate over the management of the growing system of national parks began in 1912 and culminated with the passage in 1916 of the National Park Service Act. Since its establishment in 1916, the National Park Service has gone from supervising 40 national parks and monuments to some 370 acres. The Nation Park System encompasses over 83 million acres in 49 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan and the Virgin Islands and attracts millions of visitors each year.

The Supervisor will hold office hours to meet with residents each Wednesday and Friday afternoon and any Monday that a board meeting is scheduled. To make an appointment with the Supervisor, please contact Administrative Assistant Carol Knopp at 734.676.4422, ext. 210.
