Breaking News: The Wayne County Free Bridge Closure
Bridge Closure This Coming Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 9:00 a.m.

Per my discussions with Wayne County and the Bridge Contractor today, the Township has been informed that the Wayne County Bridge will be closing on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. Signage informing all residents of the closing date and time will hopefully be up on Friday, April 27, 2007. Traffic control devices as well as traffic lights and signals will become activated by Wayne County on Monday, April 30 at Bridge and Meridian Roads on Grosse Ile and on the Riverview side of the river at northbound/southbound Jefferson at Bridge Road. My office and the Township Manager’s Office will conduct a final meeting before the closure this Friday, April 27 with the Police and Fire Departments. We have additionally asked the Grosse Ile Bridge Company representatives to attend this meeting.

Please review the attached are two PDF files, one being the Wayne County Press Release announcing the closure of the bridge and the second being the traffic control order detailing the traffic control devices, lights and signals that will be activated during the closure.

DTE Energy Project Update

The date for the DTE Energy Shut Down of the entire Island is scheduled for Sunday, April 29, 2007 from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Please recognize this is a total shut down of all power – there will be no exceptions.

A shut down rain date of Sunday, May 6, 2007 is scheduled if weather conditions prohibit the work from being completed on Sunday, April 29, 2007. The times on the rain day will be the same as on April 29, 2007 (1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.).

Police Chief Bill Barron and Fire Chief Duncan Murdock will have staff and emergency personnel on duty that night during the electrical shut down and are prepared to assist Island residents during the event.

 

Police Open House – Bring the Kids - Chief Baron is making Hot Dogs

The Grosse Ile Police Department will be having an Open House on Monday, April 30, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. All residents are invited. Refreshments will be provided. Chief Baron will be making his special hot dogs on the grill. Among the things to see and do will be jail tours, crime prevention and traffic safety displays, police motorcycle, Dive Team Truck, SWAT Team Truck, the Grosse Ile Police cars and the fatal vision goggles. Lee Wojowodzic will demonstrate the use of the fatal visions goggles. There will be plenty to see and do so take the time to bring you family out to the Police Open house.

Town Hall Meeting – Underage Drinking and Drug Usage

Please join the Grosse Ile Ministers, Grosse Ile Police Department, Grosse Ile Schools Parent Booster Groups and the Grosse Ile Township Schools for a Town Hall Meeting on Monday, May 14, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Grosse Ile Middle School Auditeria. The topic will be Underage Drinking and Drug Usage. Please join us to discuss the growing involvement of our teens in drinking and drug usage. We believe it is time for our community to come together to learn about:

• The local and national statistics;
• Understanding the rules, law and consequences that are involved;
• Discuss and strategize what WE can do to avoid unnecessary heartache and injury; and
• Develop a community plan to support our teens and keep them safe.

All community members are invited to attend and participate in this positive and proactive conversation.

Dumpster Provided for Major Trash Items
The Greenways/Open Space Committee are providing the residents of Grosse Ile with a place to drop off major trash items the weekend of May 5 and 6, 2007. The location is the Department of Public Services Yard at 8555 Groh Road. Volunteers from the Greenways and Open Space Committee will be on site from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. On the list of accepted material are tires, concrete, building discards, motor parts, and other items too large or bulky to put out with the curbside trash. Guidelines are as follows:

• The weight limit per item is 50 pounds and no longer than four feet
• If the item is larger, leave the item next to the dumpster, and a crew from the DPS will load it the following Monday
• Large yard waste items such as tree limbs, etc. will be accepted but placed in a separate dumpster.
• Tires will not be put into the dumpster but piled for a special pick-up.
• Unacceptable materials are hazardous wastes and computer hardware.

The Supervisor will hold office hours to meet with residents each Wednesday and Friday afternoon and any Monday that a board meeting is scheduled. To make an appointment with the Supervisor, please contact Administrative Assistant Carol Knopp at 734.676.4422, ext. 210.
