THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE May 3, 2007pmKurt M. Kobiljak, Grosse Ile Township SupervisorWayne County Bridge ClosureToday, Trustee Pociask, Chief Murdock, Chief Barron, Lt. Porcarelli, Township Manager Reaume, and myself attended an emergency meeting with representatives from Wayne County, the cities of Riverview, Trenton, and Wyandotte, and Greg Karmazin from the Grosse Ile Bridge Company. The topic of this meeting was solving the traffic problems on and around the toll bridge site. The sole bridge company representative urged everyone to purchase bridge passes. This method is believed to speed traffic through the toll plaza. However, the bridge company informed us that a wait for the bridge pass is necessary due to the lack of stock. Wayne County Traffic Engineering will be reviewing the timing of the traffic signals and stressed the importance of clearing the traffic queue at the toll plaza location. The efforts of the public safety experts designed a plan to implement. The plan consists of utilizing three (3) toll lanes to process motorists in a more expeditious manner and if necessary intermittently open both lanes of the toll bridge for eastbound traffic allowing residents to clear the toll plaza area and get on Grosse Ile much faster. This will mean that you will have 2 eastbound lanes coming onto Grosse Ile while the Grosse Ile Police Department will hold outgoing vehicles on Grosse Ile. Chief Barron and Lt. Porcarelli believe the hold will only be 10 to 15 minutes. The Riverview and Grosse Ile Police Departments will coordinate the implementation of this action on an “as needed basis.” I want to make it very clear that the Township will invest the time and effort to cooperatively work with the cities of Riverview, Trenton, Wyandotte and the Grosse Ile Bridge Company to get people on and off the Island. There will be exceptions. It should be noted that it has been suggested that the next true heavy day will probably be next Monday so please plan accordingly. Additionally, the Township has scheduled a Special Board Meeting this coming Monday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. to allow residents to provide their ideas on to how to better the flow of traffic while taking necessary steps to protect the safety of our residents. If the multitude of calls which I received on Wednesday and today (as well as 150+ email correspondences) are any example of the number of ideas which are out there, I am sure that our residents have many more things to say.
