THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE May 24, 2007

Kurt M. Kobiljak, Grosse Ile Township Supervisor

Memorial Day Holiday
The Grosse Ile Township Offices will be closed on Monday, May 28, 2007 for the Memorial Day Holiday. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Farmer's Market on Macomb Street – Re Discover our Business District
On June 16th, the DDA will be sponsoring its first ever Farmer’s Market. The market will be open from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Grosse Ile businesses will be located at the Township parking lot on the East End of Macomb Street across from the Grosse Ile Hardware to sell their fresh produce and products. Take the time to do your shopping on the Island – I think you will discover that our local stores have great produce and products for your friends and family. Remember Father’s Day is the very same weekend – buy Dad some strawberries or cucumbers – there could be no better present.

Open Space Committee News
Two years ago the Greenways/Open Space Committee initiated an Island wide program to remove dead or dying trees from private property. The committee is now repeating the program. Please recognize that this is a resident driven program to privately contract with tree removal contractors. The Township has merely facilitated this program for the benefit of residents and in no fashion will directly negotiate for, or contract with, either residents or contractors. The purpose is to have residents group together and have a large number of dead trees removed at one time. As a result, tree companies would be able to quote reduced prices. The program will start again on June 11th. Watch future updates for contact information.

Channels is Online!!!!
The 2007 edition of Summer Channels out! Don’t miss out on the many fun activities and events that have been scheduled by our Recreation Department. Nothing to do? That’s not possible if you have read the 2007 Summer edition of Channels! From the Edge of Wonder Series at the Water’s Edge Pool to the Riverfront Evening Concert Series at Water’s Edge and including the Daddy-Daughter Hawaiian Party, there is something for everyone of any age! From what I have heard Todd Wischer is dusting off his hula skirt so that he looks fashionable near the pool with his two daughters – I would have to believe that is reason enough for all to show up.

Questions & Answers With the Township Manager Regarding Water’s Edge Golf Course

Q: What is Water’s Edge?

A: Water’s Edge is a complete recreation facility that includes a restaurant, golf course, driving range, swimming pool, and a marina located at 25215 West River. The marina and golf course are membership facilities and the swimming pool is open to the general public. This facility is very unique in that it offers services to all ages.

Q: How does the golf membership work? How much does it cost?

A: As a member of Water’s Edge you are entitled to use the golf course and are entitled to membership discount rates for the golf course. Water’s Edge is a membership facility. The cost of a membership is $215 per year. See the membership information in this issue of Channels for additional details.

Q: Can a non-member use the golf course?

A: Yes, a non-member can golf as a guest with a member and pay a non-member rate, but it is more economical to be a member and pay discounted rates. Remember, membership has its privileges. The facility needs memberships to operate. The Township believes Water’s Edge is a high quality recreational asset and intends to offer the community great recreational opportunities at an affordable price. To be successful in this effort, Water’s Edge needs former members to return and new members to join!

Q: Do Township Funds subsidize the operation of the golf course?

A: The Water’s Edge facility is operated as an Enterprise and relies on the revenues it obtains from memberships and green fees. Due to the decline in membership the golf course has been falling behind over the past several years. The Township has aggressively taken cost cutting efforts, but is currently behind the membership and revenue projections for the current fiscal year. Without the necessary revenues and support the golf course cannot exist.

Q: As Township Manager, what message would you like to get across to the residents of the Township?

A: Water’s Edge and the Water’s Edge Golf Course are fantastic facilities and are true assets to the residents of Grosse Ile. Unfortunately, the industry trend for golf is declining. So I strongly suggest the residents support the Water’s Edge Golf Course this year, especially due to the bridge closure, and into the future to ensure that this community asset is here for future generations to enjoy. Stay and Play. Without membership support and usage the Township cannot maintain this facility.

WE NEED YOU TO BECOME A MEMBER TODAY!!

This Day in History

May 24: General Interest
1883 : Brooklyn Bridge opens

After 14 years and 27 deaths while being constructed, the Brooklyn
Bridge over the East River is opened, connecting the great cities of
New York and Brooklyn for the first time in history. Thousands of
residents of Brooklyn and Manhattan Island turned out to witness the
dedication ceremony, which was presided over by President Chester A.
Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland. Designed by the late
John A. Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension
bridge ever built to that date.

Did you know?
Memorial Day was first observed in the 1860’s by women who decorated the graves of Civil War soldiers with flags, flowers and other ornaments. First known as Decoration Day, it was celebrated on various dates in different states. Today, Memorial Day is the last Monday of May.

The Supervisor will hold office hours to meet with residents each Wednesday and Friday afternoon and any Monday that a board meeting is scheduled. To make an appointment with the Supervisor, please contact Administrative Assistant Carol Knopp at 734.676.4422, ext. 210.
