THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE July 27, 2007
Kurt M. Kobiljak, Grosse Ile Township Supervisor
Vincenzo Galati
As many on the Island are aware Vincenzo Galati, who was just 15 years old, passed away this last Monday July 23rd. The passing of anyone is always a sad time but when somebody so young leaves this earth I believe it has a profound affect on all of us. The caring and support of our community is evident by the efforts of so many people on the Island coming out to help the family in this terrible time of grief. I am most assured that Grosse Ile will take care of this family. Visitation is at Nixon Funeral Home in Wyandotte Thursday (today) from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and tomorrow, Friday from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a Funeral Mass on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church (266 Antoine - corner of McKinley and Antoine in Wyandotte). Please keep in your thoughts and prayers Vincenzo and the Galati Family.
Island Love Co.
It is easy to sit on the sidelines but to “step up to the plate” and get involved is a significant undertaking. With this in mind I became most impressed when I starting reading about Island Love.com and two young ladies. Two of our Grosse Ile residents, Jane Mech and Katie Stoddart, have teamed up to raise money for Breast Cancer Research by designing and selling their “Island Tees” t-shirts. All proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Organization. The girls will be at Kroger’s on Saturday, July 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to sell their tees. The tees are inspired by the one thing these girls love – our island! There are several styles available in sizes to fit the smallest and biggest member of your family. This project shows what is great about Grosse Ile – volunteerism. Stop by Kroger’s on Saturday, support these two fine women and show your pride for your community. The website can be found at http://islandloveco.googlepages.com/
Farmer’s Market - Another Successful Day
The Farmer’s Market held last Saturday was again successful. The DDA will be holding another market on Saturday, August 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Michigan produce will be featured (fresh corn) and folk music. The market will be set up in the Township parking lot across the street from the GI Hardware store. For your parking convenience, there is another township parking lot located behind the Hoy Pay restaurant, which affords all patrons easy access to the Farmer’s Market site.
GIFT - Movie on the Green
Grosse Ile Fun for Teens (GIFT) presents “Movie on the Green” this Friday, July 27 at Water’s Edge (west of Sharkey’s Patio Hole #1 Fairway) at dusk. The feature presentation will be “Happy Gilmore”. This movie is rated PG-13. All ages and families are welcome. This is not a drive-in so bring your chairs and blankets to enjoy the show on the green. This event is sponsored by The Grosse Ile Educational Foundation. The boys from this summer’s GIYRA baseball team will be selling candy and popcorn and will be accepting donations for these treats. All proceeds and donations will benefit the Galati family in memory of their son Vincenzo. Please note: if there is a 30% or greater chance or rain, the movie will be canceled.
Concerts on the Commons
Back again this summer is the family favorite “Concerts on the Commons”. The concerts are held Sundays during July and August from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Macomb Commons at the corner of Meridian and Macomb. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs and the entire family to enjoy music during the summer evening! Schedule for the summer is as follows:

Amended the Township Ordinances to create a separate and distinct zoning ordinance for Hickory Island

Wayne County Community College Millage Vote
The Township has been notified that the Wayne County Community College will be putting their millage renewal on the November 2007 ballot. This is 3 years ahead of time, as the millage does not expire until 2010. Since the millage increase in 2001 has passed, Grosse Ile Township taxpayers have sent over one million dollars a year to the WCCC. In 2007, Grosse Ile taxpayers will send approximately 1.6 million dollars to this institution. The student count at WCCC is 65,000 students. Per my request, the WCCC furnished the student totals for Grosse Ile Township. Based on the last five semesters, Grosse Ile had an average of 45 residents attending the college. This number is made up of young and middle age residents as well as senior citizens adults. On this note, I will be bringing a resolution at the next board meeting to oppose the college being able to bring a millage renewal three years in advance.
