THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE February 7, 2008Kurt M. Kobiljak, Township SupervisorBREAKING NEWS – Toll Bridge ClosureMy office was notified yesterday, February 6, 2008 that on Tuesday February 12, 2008, the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge will be closed for electrical maintenance between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please plan accordingly.
Emergency Light @ Road Intersections At our last Board meeting Fire Chief Duncan Murdock described a program which he will pursue to provide special notification devices at our major traffic intersections to forewarn drivers of oncoming emergency vehicles which will be traveling through the intersection. This device is not only to aid safety personnel but drivers to advise them to stay alert and watch for emergency vehicles so that they can yield to the oncoming emergency traffic. One of the major programs which I have pushed as Chairman of the Downriver Community Conference involves the joint buying power of all eighteen communities which are members of the DCC. As a result, tonight at our February 7th DCC /DMA Meeting, Chief Murdock will be presenting the very same program to all the DCC member communities to advise them of the benefits of this program. It is my hope that if other communities adopt such a program not only will many of the Downriver road intersections become more safe but, if other communities pursue the program, we will be able to negotiate with the vendor of the “E Light” and reduce the respective pricing for all Downriver communities including the cost which will be paid for by Grosse Ile. New Supervisor’s Island Update To Be Aired This Weekend One of the many successes which we have seen on Grosse Ile over the last several years is the continued development of the Airport Commerce Park. For many years the direction of the Park was not readily apparent and the infrastructure and buildings on the campus were left in a great state of disrepair. Since the Park is the component that helps fund the airport as well as guaranteeing that all of us as taxpayers don’t have our tax dollars going to support the Airport, continued successes at the Airport Commerce Park is good news for all of us. With the creation of the Airport Commerce Park Commission we have seen growth in our number of tenants, the re-securing of major tenants to long term leases, the landscaping of a once scarred area, the proposed reconstruction of the roadway and drainage system in the Commerce Park and a heavily used recreational area that includes Tennis, Soccer, a sled hill and the presence of GIYRA and GISA at the site. Take the time to watch the next Supervisor’s Island Update this weekend with Airport Commerce Park Manager Derek Thiel and Commerce Park Commission Chairman Ron Moran as they talk about where the Commerce Park Commission has come and where they plan to take it in 2008. The discussion with these two gentlemen will allow you to see how many positive programs have been instituted to make the Airport more viable and fiscally secure than it ever has been. The Rescheduled Daddy-Daughter Dance Due to the inclement weather of last Friday, the Daddy-Daughter Dance has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Friday, February 8, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Community Recreation Happenings The annual wintertime favorite, “Mother – Son Bowling”, will be held on Friday, February 22, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Woodhaven Lanes. For a cost of $18 per couple ($8 for each additional child) you and your child will receive bowling time, shoe rental, hot dog and pop and have the chance to display your bowling talents. Please register at the Recreation Department by Friday, February 15. This is always a fun event for all! 10th Annual Easter Event will be held on Saturday, March 15 at Water’s Edge from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Activities include the Easter Egg Hunt, Wagon Rides, Children’s Crafts, Wagon Rides, Prizes and Refreshments. As always, dress for the weather due to Easter being so early this year but don’t miss out on this fun filled family event! Raise Your Hands for Education Join the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation for an evening of tropical music and entertainment entitled “Raise Your Hands For Education.” This annual fundraiser is usually a sold out event so don’t miss out on a fun evening. Dinner with live and silent auctions and musical entertainment will keep the evening lively! The event will be at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club on Saturday, February 16 starting at 7:00 p.m. Cost is $65 per person. For more information and tickets, call Victoria Murphy. Why is Easter so early this year? The dating of Easter has been a concern from the very beginning. The delegates at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. established a rule for dating Easter Sunday. Easter is to be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon which follows March 21, the spring equinox. The full moon is March 21 after the start of the spring equinox – hence Easter this year is March 23, 2008. Congratulations!! I had the pleasure of attending the Senior Valentine Luncheon on Wednesday February 6th. All luncheon attendees had the honor of congratulating Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wydeck as they celebrated 65 years of marriage. What a wonderful example to us all! I and the Township wish them the very, very best!
