Township Board Highlights
The Township Board conducted a Special Meeting and Study Session last Tuesday evening. The Special Meeting began with a Public Hearing for a Recreation Grant followed by the Board approving by resolution to move forward with the grant application. The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comment regarding submittal of a grant application to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for park improvements at the Airport Recreation Area consisting of five (5) Athletic Fields (soccer/football), a gravel parking lot, a paved handicap parking area, picnic shelter with connecting ADA compliant access pathways and drainage improvements.
The proposed project site is located in the public recreation area located north of the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport Commerce Park, 9601Groh Road.
The Grosse Ile Community Recreation Commission recommended to the Grosse Ile Township Board of Trustees that an application be submitted to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources requesting a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the amount of $75,000 to assist in the development of four athletic fields (soccer/football), a gravel parking lot, a paved handicap parking area, picnic shelter with connecting ADA compliant access pathways and drainage improvements, at the Airport Recreation Area with a total cost of $150,000 as detailed below:
Grosse Ile Township Proposed Appropriation $ 75,000
Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant $ 75,000
TOTAL PROJECT COST $150,000
Grosse Ile Township Board committed the local match of $75,000, to be available in 2008 contingent upon the grant being approved.

Michigan Municipal League Opposes Annexation Legislation
The Michigan Municipal League has come out against legislation designed to give Townships more protection against annexation proceedings. State Senator Bruce Patterson introduced the legislation. It is based on previous bills put forth in 2001 and 2003 that require that any proposed annexation be voted on by the citizens in the affected area, the entire City and the entire Township. Currently, the state boundary commission has the final say. The bills would also create new lengthy timelines that would greatly delay the annexation process and cost Michigan jobs. Patterson has said that he it wouldn’t be easy legislation to get approved. He has stated he is open to some proposed amendments, which included limiting the legislation to Townships in Wayne County, stalling a 3-5 year moratorium, or making it applicable to Townships with a population of 20,000 or more.
Make a Wish
A Grosse Ile resident recently had a wish come true; golfing with Annika Sorenstam in Florida. The Make a Wish Foundation certainly made a dream come for true for Molly Esordi, the daughter of Tom and Leslie Esordi.

Supervisor’s Island Question
Responses from Last Week:
"This seems to be the best thing the Township could have done. The traffic seems to flow smoothly from all directions, and being a Waterway/Chicory resident, I feel much safer making a left turn unto Parkway during rush hour. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
"Yes, very well done. Well thought out and it looks much better than before as a bonus. Thank you."
"Yes, the area is much safer, (though it is taking residents time to orient themselves to the light) and will also be very attractive when the planting area is completed. The planners must be commended. It is also very helpful to have a full lane for right turns at G. I. Parkway and Meridian, heading south on Meridian."
"Yes! Absolutely!!!
I used to see so many terrifying driving events at the old ramp.
Congrats on a great solution."
This Week's Question:
