THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE March 6, 2008

Kurt M. Kobiljak, Township Supervisor

Women’s History Month – A Great Start

This last Monday night my oldest daughter Katie and I had the opportunity of attending "They Made a Difference: Women in History" at the St James Episcopal Church Chapel.  In the continued celebration of Women's History Month the Grosse Ile Historical Society in conjunction with the Women's History Project (many may have read about it in the recent Sunday Detroit Newspaper) presented a program where actress Judy Dery re-enacted notable women from history.  The event was well attended and paid recognition to the many outstanding women who played significant roles in the progression and advancement of the women's movement through science, aviation, health and teaching.  Katie was impressed by the many different women she heard about, Ms. Dery's depiction of each of them, and how some of the famous women she had studied about had even been on Grosse Ile.  If you haven't had the opportunity get involved in the Women's History Month on Grosse Ile by contacting either Committee Coordinators Irene Will or Rena Perlick-Kloska.  Remember this March marks the 21st Anniversary of Women's History Month.

Township Board Highlights

In light of the tough economic times in the area one of the initiatives which I have pushed at the Downriver Community Conference is the notion of joint purchases in an attempt to reduce the costs of tangible goods which a Township or City has to pay on a regular basis.  These goods might involve salt, copy paper, water meters, vehicles, bulk gas purchases etc.  The Board will be discussing a Department of Public Services resolution Monday night.  Another focus of my attention on the joint purchasing concept relates to getting familiar and involved in MITN, the Michigan Intergovernmental Trade Network..  I have asked Michael Lasley of the City of Farmington Hills to come to our Monday Board meeting and give us an update on MITN.  The MITN mission is simple:  It is a group of agencies that joined forces to create a Regional Bid Notification System to notify companies of new bid opportunities.

ANNUAL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

A reminder to all residents that the 2008 Annual Meeting is set for Saturday, March 15 starting with a reception in the 1st floor lobby at 9:15 a.m. with the Annual Meeting to follow at 10:00 a.m. in the 2nd floor Board Room.  The Board will review the past year as well as thank the many volunteers that work on our commissions and committees and contribute to the betterment of our Township.

Tax guides available across the district

State Senator Bruce Patterson has made available to Island residents free tax guides to assist you with your tax questions. The guide includes information for the 2007 year on property taxes, homestead property tax credits, farmland and open space tax relief, the home heating credit programs, Michigan Income Tax, Michigan Business tax, and 2007 tax forms.

The 2007 tax guides are available at Grosse Ile Township Hall in the Administration Office.

WARNING:  IRS Scams

The IRS is warning taxpayers to beware of several current e-mail and telephone scams that use the IRS name as a lure.  On scam is known as “The Rebate Phone Call.”

The scheme uses the word "rebate" as part of the lure.  The consumers receive a phone call from someone identifying himself as an IRS employee.  The caller tells the targeted victim that he is eligible for a sizable rebate for filing his taxes early.  Then, the caller asks for the target's bank account information for the direct deposit of the rebate.  If the target refuses, he is told that he cannot receive the rebate.

The phone call is a scam.  The IRS cannot provide advance payment to taxpayers and the IRS does not force taxpayers to use direct deposit

Kiwanis International program Read Around The World.

March 3, 2008 was selected by the Kiwanis Club of Grosse Ile as the day to participate in the Kiwanis International program Read Around The World.  Kiwanisians Art and Claire Koester invite Township Managers to be involved in this program by visiting Meridian and Parke Lane Schools to read to children in grades Kindergarten through Grade 2.  The focus of the Grosse Ile program is to emphasize to the students that reading is important by having important people read to them.

On March 3, nine Grosse Ile Township Managers visited Meridian and Parke Lane schools to read to youngsters in 17 classrooms.  Taking part with me in this program were Dale Reaume, Township Manager; Derek Thiel, Airport Manager; Lorinda Beneteau, Administrative Manager; Sharon Gray, Deputy Clerk; Annette Wurtsmith, Deputy Treasurer; Tim Rooney, Recreation Superintendent; Duncan Murdock, Fire Chief; and Kenneth Pelland, Police Officer.  Not only do the children enjoy this day, but the Township employees enjoy interacting with the children and talking about their Township duties.   Katie and Stefan were additionally happy to read some more books with their Dad.
