THE SUPERVISOR’S E UPDATE April 25, 2008

Kurt M. Kobiljak, Township Supervisor

Welcome Back from Iraq

Lt. John Chambers

Thank you for your service to our country!

Our 4th Graders Visit Township Hall

I had the pleasure of speaking with the 4th graders from Grosse Ile Schools on Thursday, April 24.  The classes were on a trip around the Island, visiting several historical spots to learn more about the Island and at the end of their journey they arrived at Township Hall. This was a continuation of their learning about our different forms of  government in light of their recent travels to Lansing.  It is always fun to talk with our kids for they provide a great perspective that we sometimes don’t always hear either as a Township or as an Adult. Today we talked about our open spaces and bike paths, the deer population, the need for more restaurants on Macomb and  how all their parents appreciate paying taxes on Grosse Ile! Needless to say it was a great day.

Township Board Highlights

The Board of Trustees will hold a Study Session on Monday, April 28, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Board Room.  The Public Services Commission and Greenways/Open Space Committee will talk about projects and updates from their groups.  Take the time to come to the Township or watch the meeting live on Channel 12 to hear their reports – you will see hear that we have numerous projects which will be starting very shortly that will most assuredly make our roads, bike paths and water systems better.

GINLC Nature Area will soon be open!

The Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy will open their Nature Area starting on Saturdays starting on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and also on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The group works very hard on this area to preserve the natural environment and the public is welcome to view their efforts during the public openings.

Dump The Junk – Find The Treasure

The Greenways/Open Space Committee will be hosting a drop off at the DPS Building on Groh to encourage all residents to clean their homes and yards.  “Dump The Junk – Find A Treasure” will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 17th and 18th from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.   A dumpster will be available for the junk and trash any resident wishes to get rid of.

Planning Commission Update

The Planning Commission will meet on Monday, May 5th at 7:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor Board Room at Township Hall. They have a full agenda but one of the highlights will be a request from a new business owner to develop an arcade.  It will be interesting to see how it all develops!

Grosse Ile Rowing Club

The Grosse Ile Rowing Club will on “on the river” the next two weekends.  The Hebda Cup Regatta will be held this Saturday, April 26 and the Wy-Hi Regatta will be held next weekend, May 2 and 3 from the Wyandotte Boat Club.  With the beautiful spring weather upon us, don’t hesitate to drive over to Wyandotte to cheer your Grosse Ile Team on!

Farmer’s Market 2008

Once again this year, the DDA will be sponsoring the Farmer’s Markets on Macomb Street.  The first market will be held on Saturday, May 31 during the annual Islandfest celebration.  The times will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  One of the new vendors I am trying to convince to attend this year is Calders.  Hopefully by mid May I can confirm their attendance.

For the reminder of the 2008 season, June through October, the markets will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month.  The east end Macomb Street Township parking lot will once again serve as the location with convenient parking across the street behind the Hoy Pan restaurant.  We hope to see your there!
