Marina Improvements
The Community Recreation Commission has been hard at work bringing a new face to the Water's Edge Marina facility. Over the last several months they have conducted many operations to transform the marina into a more appealing and user-friendly asset for Grosse Ile.

Safety concerns were addressed during the project, such as removal of old wooden add-ons to the docks, repairing steel structures, stabilizing docks that were shaky through the installation of new pilings, replacing concrete decking that had become unstable over the years, replacement of down-boards to provide more secure docking & tie off points for the boats, light fixtures were repaired to provide night time safety & security and repairs were made to the travel lift dock to eliminate unnecessary wear to the equipment tires. Handicap railing & grab bars were installed to make access easier for members who might have had difficulty accessing their boats.

Although the most important factor in the improvements to the facility was safety, many beautification tasks were undertaken. Through the CRC’s direction, all the docks were power washed and the steel surfaces painted shiny white. The flagpole was refurbished and a bright new American flag is now flying 50 feet above the facility. A general clean up of the area was conducted, including adding gravel to the parking lot, smoothing out the old pot holes and eliminating weeds.

In addition to the efforts of the CRC, a marina subcommittee will conduct inspections of the marina a minimum of three times per year. These inspections will take place in late March, early July and in October.

The Recreation Department staff would like to thank Dan Spangler for coordinating the marina improvement projects during the 2007 season. Dan’s commitment, energy and enthusiasm made this major project successful.

Service Requests
Please notify the office staff if you require service at your dock or notice other problems in the marina. Repair request forms are available by contacting the office. Completed forms will be given to the Recreation Director. Please expect a timely response following all requests for service.

Boat Storage Jacks
The requirement for all boats to be stored on boat storage jacks has been delayed until the 2008-09 winter storage season. The Community Recreation Commission will explore the possibility of making a group purchase on jack stands, in order to obtain a better price for our members.

Boat Jack Stands as They Pertain to Sailboats
The Community Recreation Commission understands the need for the use of cradles on sailboats. Therefore, the Commission will grandfather all current members and they will not have to purchase jack stands. New members will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and final determination will be solely at the Commission’s discretion.

Dumpsters
At the beginning of the boating season, two new dumpsters were placed in the marina for member use. The Commission’s intentions are to provide members with ample space for rubbish disposal and to improve the overall appearance of the marina. The Commission sincerely hopes the new arrangement has been beneficial to all our members. Please let us know how you feel about the dumpsters in comparison to the trash barrels. There are bicycles, grills, etc. openly stored at the South end of the marina. Do they belong to you? Please dispose of them or store properly.

New Keyless Entry to Clubhouse
As many of you know, the Commission approved the installation of a keyless entry at the clubhouse. This new system allows members to utilize the bathrooms and showers 24 hours per day. The code to the lock is available to registered members listed on the marina application form. Please contact Kathy Nachtrab in the office. Note: The code will be changed periodically for security purposes. Registered members will be notified.

Pets
Pets must be cared for in such a manner that they will not be offensive in respect to odor or unsanitary conditions. All pets must be on a leash when in the marina (cats as well as dogs). No animal shall be permitted to roam free on the docks, parking lot or common areas. Important: Owners must pick up and remove pet droppings immediately. Violations should be reported and your anonymity will be protected.

Security
Security for the marina is the “Neighborhood Watch” policy. If you see anyone suspicious on the docks or parking lot, please call the office.

8 AM to 5 PM on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 through November 4, 2007. Members will be updated if there is a change in the haul out schedule.

Social Committee “Is There Interest?”
With the all the great opportunities at Water’s Edge, we feel there is need for a Social Committee. The staff would like to see the boaters take advantage of their membership at Water’s Edge. We want the boaters, their family and friends to use the swimming pool, the golf course, driving range, volleyball court and Sharkey’s Restaurant.

The Recreation Staff wants to establish a social committee with the boaters in mind. A regular schedule of events and member services would positively affect the boater’s experience at Water’s Edge.

If you are interested or know of someone who would like to get involved please inform the office staff. As you well know, a big part of the boating experience is sharing with fellow boaters by the shore or up on the hill overlooking the river. We have a beautiful facility! Lets enjoy together and build for the future.

Marina Sub-Committee
In 2006, the Community Recreation Commission established a sub-committee to focus on improving and maintaining our wonderful marina at Water’s Edge. The sub-committee will continue to look at methods to improve communication with the boaters and community, address safety concerns, and provide regular maintenance to the facility and plan for the future.

The members of the Marina Sub-committee include:
• Walter Pociask, Township Board Liaison
• Bob Lang, Travel Lift Operator and More
• Bob Wischer, Marina Member Liaison
• Bill Morreau, Community Recreation Commissioner
• Walt Kacher, Community Recreation Commission Chairperson
• Brian Sharkey, Sharkey’s Tavern
• Tim Rooney, Recreation Director

The Community Recreation Commission truly appreciates the many hours each individual has dedicated to improving the marina and supporting the staff.

Please don’t hesitate in voicing your opinions and desires to any of the sub-committee members. They will let the Commission know how our members feel about services and facilities. “We can’t do anything if we don’t know!”

Trenton Power Plant – Coal Yard Dust Control
Township Board Liaison, Walter Pociask has been meeting periodically with representative from the Trenton Power Plant to address the problem of coal dust the boater’s experience that originates from the coal yard.

Trustee Pociask is now working along with DTE officials on an Environmental Management Program with the objective of reducing emissions from coal unloading activities.

Actions taken to date include:
• DTE officials met with Recreation Commission on January 25, 2007
• Water cannon used via timer every hour for 5 minutes: Spring-Fall
• Use dust suppressant on stacker tower and dumper house upon dumping train

In early July, marina members contacted the Recreation Director to notify him they were experiencing problems again with ash and coal dust. Nick Chuey, a DTE official and Environmental Management member responded to Director Rooney upon hearing about the new problems. Mr. Chuey recorded information about the complaints and will investigate further and provide information back to the Recreation Department.

DTE will continue to work towards being better environmental stewards by monitoring and measuring external complaints and finding methods to better manage coal dust and ash.

The key will be feedback from the boating community at Water’s Edge.

If you notice or experience problems with coal dust or ash, please contact the Recreation Director at (734) 675-2364.

If you would like to contact DTE directly concerning dust emissions, please leave a message at (734) 362-2219.
