Community Development

Effective May 7th the State of Michigan began permitting residential and commercial construction activities.   As a result, the Grosse Ile Building Department will be available on a limited basis for both permit assistance and inspections.  If you are planning on having work done at your home, the Grosse Ile Building Department will be available during the following dates/times:

May 13- 8:00 to 4:00;
May 19 & May 21- 8:00 to 4:00;
May 27 & Thursday May 28- 8:00 to 4:00;

Outside of these dates/times, you may email the Building Department at lorriet@grosseile.com or call at 734-676-4422 x226.  Operations after May 28th with be based upon State of Michigan mandates.

Inspectors will be performing inspections according to their pre-Covid 19 schedule of:

General Building Inspections- Monday and Wednesday after 4:30 p.m. and Saturday A.M.
Mechanical and Plumbing- Tuesdays after 4:30 and Saturday A.M.
Electrical- Monday and Tuesday 3:30-6:00, and Thursday and Friday 3:30-6:00.

Grosse Ile Township Hall remains closed to the public until further notice.  Permit applications can be emailed or dropped off using the Twp. Hall drop box.  Fees can be paid via the Twp. Hall drop box.  Completed permits can be received via scanned/emailed document.

Inspection guidelines are as following:
Not Permitted:

  • Interior inspections of occupied residences (this includes residences where owners/contractors are and are/not present).
  • For occupied units listed above, inspections can be conducted through the provision of photo or video evidence of the work performed.  If a follow up inspection is necessary to supplement photo and video evidence, on-site inspections can be handled at a later date.


  • Interior inspections of new construction, non-occupied units with proper social distancing and PPE requirements.
  • Exterior inspections with proper social distancing and PPE requirements.

Township Ordinances prohibit the storage of boats, trailers and recreational vehicles in  the front yard. The applicable Ordinances #285-3.3B (4B) and #285-3.3B (4A-1),  require that they be located in the side or rear yards. Please note: Waterfront  properties do not have a rear yard. They have a street front yard and a water front yard. Also, corner lots have 2 front yards.
